This Is the Best Workout for WomenMSN - When it comes to exercise, the aerobic kind steals all the glory. All of the fun ways to sweat can help you get the government-recommended 150 minutes of aerobic activity each week, like swimming, volleyball, brisk walking—anything that speeds up your blood flow and breath.
Less appealing is the other, more neglected kind: strength-training. While about half of Americans meet the goals for aerobic exercise, only 20% do the recommended muscle-strengthening activities that work major muscle groups. Women, especially, tend to shy away from it. But they neglect it at their own peril. Strength-training significantly lowers the risk for type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, finds a new study published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Scientists (and anyone else who’s ever pumped some iron) have long known that strength training makes muscles bigger. It also protects bones by increasing their density, an important perk for aging women. But more recent evidence shows that it also reduces BMI, which improves how the body uses insulin. A bigger muscle also means that glucose can get around the body better. The researchers wanted to see if the lesser-known benefits of strength training, like these, actually influence a person’s risk of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Using data from the Women’s Health Study, they followed nearly 36,000 older women who ranged in age from 47-98. The women filled out questionnaires yearly from 2000-2014 about their health and exercise levels, and one question asked women to estimate how much weight lifting/strength training they’d done per week in the past year. The researchers tracked which of the women got cardiovascular disease—including events like heart attack and stroke—and type-2 diabetes. Whether a woman did these muscle-strengthening exercises or not predicted much about her health. “Women who reported participating in any amount of strength training were more likely to have a lower BMI, more likely to engage in healthy dietary patterns, and less likely to be a current smoker,” compared with women who avoided it, the authors write. Strength training was also linked to a woman’s risk for the two conditions. Those who said they did any amount of strength training had a type-2 diabetes risk 30% lower and a cardiovascular disease risk 17% lower than those who did none, even after the researchers controlled for other variables like age, vegetable and fruit intake and physical activity. Not surprisingly, adding in aerobic exercise helped drive both risks down even more. Those who did at least 120 minutes a week of aerobic exercise and some strength training had a type-2 diabetes risk 65% lower than women who didn’t do either. More research is needed to determine the optimum amount of strength training for women and men to reduce their risks. But the study suggests that both kinds of exercise impart unique benefits—and that strength training has some serious scientific weight to it. Few things can derail a trip like coming down with a cold or the flu. Yet with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 91 different strains of flu virus in circulation during the 2012-2013 flu season, avoiding illness while on the road can be especially challenging.
It's possible to infect others with the flu virus beginning one day before symptoms emerge to up to five to seven days after you become sick, according to the Contac Cold & Flu HQ. The number of Americans traveling increases dramatically during the holiday season, which happens to coincide every year with the height of the flu season. Travelers are exposed to more germs and viruses than folks who stay home, so if you'll be taking a trip this winter, it pays to keep some preventive precautions and treatment options in mind.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's website, flu.gov, advises travelers to:
* Get vaccinated at least two weeks before you travel. The flu vaccine administered in the U.S. will protect you anywhere in the world.
* Wash your hands frequently, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleanser. Think of all the surfaces you touch while traveling - from the steering wheel of your rental car to the door handle of the convenience store where you stop for directions. Now think of all the other people who have touched those surfaces too and left behind their germs.
* Avoid habits that can spread germs, like touching your eyes, nose or mouth, and stay away from people who are already sick. This can be difficult to do while traveling, but there's no shame in reseating yourself away from people who are coughing in a waiting room or asking to be moved on a flight away from a traveler who is coughing or sneezing.
* Maintain healthful habits like getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, staying hydrated and eating well. Travel can be tiring under the best circumstances, so it's important to get enough rest while on the road.
* If you do catch the flu, don't travel. Stay home from work or school for at least 24 hours after your fever breaks.
Getting vaccinated isn't always an option for everyone, so if you do come down with the flu, it's important to take steps to relieve symptoms and help your body's natural defenses fight off the virus.
Flu.gov says antiviral medications may help reduce the length of time you're sick and even make the illness milder, but they are most effective if started in the first two days that you become sick. You'll need to see your doctor for a prescription.

Pension plan funding shortfalls threaten retirees in all 50 states
(BPT) - Everyone knows it is important to save for retirement in order to build a nest egg and enjoy the "golden years." So why is it that state and local governments many times act irresponsibly when it comes to saving for the future of public employees?
Government pensions are the way in which state and local public employees like teachers, police officers and firefighters receive retirement benefits. Typically both the employee and the government set aside money each year to be invested. The investments will hopefully grow over time, and both the annual contributions and the investment growth is understood to form the pool of money public employees will be able to use once they reach retirement. That's the theory.
Unfortunately, according to Unaccountable and Unaffordable 2016, a new, state-by state analysis from the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), government pensions are being massively underfunded across the states, and now hardworking taxpayers are on the hook. What is the price tag? Across the 50 states, unfunded pension obligations now total $5.6 trillion. Now, that number sounds large at a national scale, but what does it mean for the average American? To be exact, this state pension debt equates to an average price tag of $17,427 for every man, woman and child in the United States.
There are numerous reasons why pension liabilities are so large. For one, the stock market is not growing as quickly as many assumed it would, exiting the recent economic downturn. Therefore, investments for many pension funds are not meeting expectations. The average pension fund assumes they will earn a whopping 7.37 percent on their investments over the long term. These overly-optimistic assumptions fly in the face of what many financial experts are calling a "new normal" of lower than expected investment earnings in the future.
Another inconvenient truth is that many state governments have failed to deposit the annually required contributions into pension funds every year. The urge to spend more money on other government projects, however well intentioned, has diverted much-needed contributions away from pensions and has contributed significantly to unfunded liabilities.
When pensions are unstable, millions of Americans are faced with an uncertain retirement. However, this is not only a problem for government workers - it affects all Americans. Without a sustainable solution to underfunded pensions, higher taxes will be the reality for all hardworking taxpayers.
What's more, an increasing percentage of state budgets are being drained to pay pension benefits, with less money available for important functions like funding public schools and fixing roads. One especially sobering story comes from Illinois, where since 2009, this trend is so extreme that 89 cents out of every new dollar of education spending has gone to teacher pensions, leaving just 11 cents for salaries, textbooks, building costs and the various in-classroom costs of education. And by 2025, Illinois will spend more on teacher-retirement costs than it will spend on the classroom.
Pension funding is not a Republican vs. Democrat issue. It's a retirement issue that affects all Americans. Unfunded pension liabilities will be harmful to the future of workers, retirees and taxpayers alike, if forward-thinking policymakers do not tackle pension reform in a timely fashion.

East Bangor Love Feast
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church will celebrate a "Love Feast" during the worship service on Sunday, January 8th at 9:15 a.m (rescheduled from December). A "Love Feast" is a special service of song, prayer and food. Although deriving from the Moravian tradition, the "Love Feast" was brought to the Methodist church by John Wesley in 1738 after traveling to America with the Moravians.
