ENVIRONMENT...Is Your Tuna Sandwich Bad for the Environment?
(StatePoint) More canned tuna is consumed in the United States than in any other country in the world. Unfortunately, the vast majority of tuna sold in the American market fails to meet fundamental sustainability standards, according to Greenpeace’s 2015 Canned Tuna shopping guide, their first-ever US canned tuna ranking.
The ranking looked at 14 well-known US national and private label supermarket brands to evaluate their sourcing policies and practices -- including whether the fishing method used to catch their tuna harms other marine life, whether they avoid shark finning, and whether they can trace their products back to the sea. In addition, it examined how equitable and socially responsible are the brands. The ranking concluded that most brands do not have adequate measures in place to address sustainability and human welfare and labor issues. “Consumers should know that many canned tuna brands are contributing to ocean destruction at an alarming rate,” says Greenpeace Seafood Markets Lead Graham Forbes. “However, the silver lining here is that other companies are stepping up to provide ocean safe options for their customers.” So how can you become a savvier grocery store shopper? Here are a few tips to ensure your tuna is sustainable: • Think beyond the label. “Dolphin safe” does not necessarily mean ocean safe. Turtles, sharks and other vulnerable ocean life are collateral damage in tuna fisheries that supply the US market. To find out how your favorite brand measures up, how to decode the labeling on your cans of tuna, or to sign a petition asking brands to change their practices, visit www.greenpeace.org/usa/tunaguide. • Consumer demand can make a difference. Talk to your local grocer about stocking shelves with brands that have a comprehensive approach to sustainable and equitable products. You may not often look down at your lunch and wonder what had to happen for it to get to your plate. But your consumer choices do have an impact on both the environment and the workforce involved in production. By becoming a more informed consumer, you can ensure your kitchen is friendlier to both. Literary Litterbug ArrrestedBOULDER, Colo., April 24 (UPI) -- The Colorado State Patrol said the "Literary Litterbug" responsible for dumping more than 600 books on a stretch of highway over several months was caught in the act.
State Patrol Sgt. Rob Madden said Trooper Dennis Wilder identified Glenn Pladsen, 62, as a possible suspect in the case of the "Literary Litterbug" or "Book Dropper" responsible for dumping more than 600 books along Highway 287 in Boulder County. Madden said Wilder witnessed Pladsen throwing books out of his car window while driving on the road Thursday. "The investigation went strictly by the book and after conducting surveillance of the driver, Trooper Wilder observed him throw books from his moving vehicle," Madden wrote in a pun-filled news release. "Trooper Wilder threw the book at the driver for six counts of littering from a moving vehicle." Madden said Colorado Department of Transportation workers have spent more than 20 hours clearing the more than 600 books from the highway since Feb. 19. "On the surface, this may seem like a petty thing, but you can't judge a book by its cover," Madden wrote. "Any time CDOT crews respond to provide maintenance to the highway, they are at risk of being hit by passing motorists. There is also the associated delay caused by the temporary lane closures as well as the cost for the cleanup." Pladsen said he ended up with thousands of used books when a store in Boulder closed about eight years ago and his attempts to sell them online were unsuccessful. He said he dumped the books on his way to work in Longmont. "I didn't even know anybody even cared," Pladsen told the Longmont Times-Call. "I just thought they were being blown in the ditch. That's what I thought was happening." "I had no idea it was a mystery. I would have stopped a long time ago if I though anybody cared," he said. Madden said officials cared very much about the dumping. "The Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Department of Transportation would like to remind everybody of our combined responsibility to keep our roadways clean," Madden said. "Anytime trash is thrown from a vehicle there are consequences. Please keep our beautiful state in mind as you drive our roads and we sincerely hope this is the final chapter in this annoying story." Ask The Doc........
Let's Talk Adjectives
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com Invisible, comfortable, corrective, clear, precise, inexpensive, beautifying, and empowering. I bet you rarely think of those adjectives, and dentistry in the same sentence. However, that is exactly what you get with one of dentistry’s latest tools. I’m talking about Invisalign, clear aligner therapy to place your teeth in the proper position for a life –time of good oral health. This comfortable way to align teeth is proving to be very successful, and at Family Dental Care, Dr. Gary Williams, and staff are seeing such good results, that we think it deserves special attention. We are reserving 10 spots, on April 23rd, for those interested in improving their oral health. I believe so much in this treatment, that on that day, I will “pitch-in” and pay for some of your treatment. Together, you and I can give you the smile that you have always wanted. Call soon, appointment spots are limited. (610)863-8988. Slate Belt Senior Center
