Granny Ripper Ate Victims' Organs?
Tamara Samsonova, 68, who was arrested in July, allegedly admitted to killing at least three people, dismembering them and spreading their body parts around the St. Petersburg area.
Police said Samsonova's diary contained her accounts of multiple slayings.
"I killed my tenant Volodya, cut him to pieces in the bathroom with a knife and put the pieces of his body in plastic bags and threw them away in the different parts of Frunzensky district," a diary entry reads.
Samsonova, who is also suspected of killing her husband, was recorded in CCTV footage carrying a black plastic bag believed to have contained the remains of a 79-year-old woman she had worked for as a caretaker.
"I am guilty and deserve a punishment," Samsonova told a judge during a court appearance last week.
The accused killer has been branded "Granny Ripper" by British tabloid The Sun, but "Grannybal Lector" could prove to be a more accurate nickname -- Investigative Committee officials said the recovered victims were missing some internal organs and investigators are looking into the possibility of cannibalism.
"It is not excluded [from the investigation]," officials told reporters.

Deputy Saves Man From Moving Train
A video posted to YouTube by Karin Lizana shows San Mateo County Sheriff's Deputy Lance Whitted dragging Nelson Gomez, 20, away from his stranded car on the Caltrain tracks Monday in Sunnyvale just seconds before a train smashed into the Volkswagen Jetta.Whitted and Deputy Erik Rueppel were conducting a traffic stop nearby when they noticed the car appeared to be stuck on the tracks.
"I can't say why I did it or why someone else wouldn't do it. At that point, it's just instincts that kick in. You don't have time to analyze the situation. I knew that my job, working in law enforcement is to preserve life, and that's what I did," Whitted told the San Francisco Chronicle.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL....
How Safe is Your Child’s School?
In this regard, many architects are leading the way to improve school safety, harnessing the power of design to secure schools, and in the process, enhance learning.
“A safe school is one that allows administrators to have physical control over the environment. It is a place where students, parents and staff can go and not be concerned by outside or internal threats, such as intruders, natural disasters or bullies,” says Brian G. Minnich, co-chair of the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Education who has worked in educational design for the past 19 years. “What’s more, a secure school need not feel like a fortress or a bunker -- safety measures should feel invisible to those protected by them.”
So, how does your child’s school stack up? While there is no national standard to help assess what makes a facility safe, better security can be achieved by addressing three key factors, according to Minnich:
• Life Safety: From fires to flash floods, natural disasters can happen without warning. Your school should take geography into consideration first and foremost. Also, the school should be designed to ensure that students, staff and first responders can easily maneuver through the facility in case of emergency.
• External Security Concerns: Quick fixes, such as installing additional security cameras or employing extra guards are not the only answers to threats posed by intruders. A school should have a single, main point of access that’s easily identifiable; and administrators should have visual control over every approaching individual. Security is enhanced, as well, through a design concept called “concentric rings of protection,” which provides multiple barriers to entry: at the property line, the exterior of the building, and within the building, via an internal set of doors. This layered protection makes it more difficult for a trespasser to reach the inside of a facility.
• Transparency and flexibility: School invasions and their tragic results make headlines all the time. However, the most common threat in schools are internal -- bullies. An open environment, in which students and staff can easily “see and be seen,” can help deter bullying and violence in schools.
“Visual transparency is key to achieving natural surveillance and fostering positive social interaction,” according to Minnich.

When school security is designed into a building, kids can focus on learning, without fear.

Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
