Motorized Paraglider Flies over Prison
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office said a helicopter unit was dispatched when Ron Nagin, 67, flew his motorized paraglider near the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic about 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Deputies said officials were concerned the man may have dropped contraband into the prison yard.
"We have several open compounds, so there was concern that somebody might be dropping contraband or there could be some crazy escape attempt. It was really hard to say," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Brian Allen told KABC-TV.
A slow-speed aerial chase ensued until Nagin landed at Tapia Canyon Paintball Center about 6:05 p.m.
Nagin told deputies he had been carried toward the prison by the wind and he did not immediately respond to the helicopter crew's instructions to land because his loud motor drowned out the sound of the chopper's PA system and sirens.
"At first I thought they were just looky-loos, just trying to investigate the sport, but I figured when they cut in front of me twice, I'd better turn around and land," Nagin said.
The sheriff's department said Nagin was released without a citation.
"Deputies watched and did not see the pilot drop anything from the motorized hangglider," the department said in a statement.

Leopard Lunges at Car
The video, shared on the official YouTube channel for Kruger National Park, shows the leopard approach the vehicle and walk circles around it while the occupants comment that it appears to be looking for a way into the car.An occupant can be heard telling another family member to "quickly" close an open car window.
The big cat approaches the front left window seconds later and peers through the glass before lunging at the window.
Park officials said the leopard was the same animal that was later euthanized after attacking a tour guide.
"The people in this vehicle (who took the video) did nothing wrong and acted according to the book by closing their windows in time," the video's description reads.
BACK-TO-SCHOOL....
Banish school lunch blues w/grapes
Of course good ol’ PB&J is a lunchbox staple, but who doesn’t crave something just a little different every now and then? Here are some quick and easy ideas that are sure to earn an A-plus with your kids:
- Add halved grapes to chicken salad for a refreshing take on this timeless sandwich filling. Pack it in a separate container, and provide crackers for a crunchy alternative to bread.
- Offer a mix of baby carrots and sugar snap peas with hummus for a smashing side.
- Create a bento-box-style, snackable lunch combo: include cheese and crackers, fresh grapes from California, and a small handful of nuts.
- Make a sandwich rollup, using flatbread or flour tortillas as the base, or stuff pita pockets with filling, as a fun replacement for sliced bread.
- Tuck whole-grain tortilla chips and salsa, a side of black bean and corn salad, plus cheese and grapes for a Mexican spin on lunch.
- Looking for a gluten-free alterative? Try a cheese stick rolled with a slice of ham, with grapes on the side.
- Shape-shift familiar lunch items to add interest: offer cheese cubes, apple rings, carrot coins, and tortilla pinwheels.
After school, a good snack can revive and refresh your student for homework time and afterschool activities. Smoothies are a great-tasting option, offering unlimited possibilities for ingredient combos and the ability to customize to everyone’s liking. Plus, they’re a nutritious way to tide over tummies until dinner, or even start the day at breakfast, by providing an excellent source of protein.
Grapes and yogurt are a classic combination, and this great-tasting smoothie proves the point: creamy and naturally sweet, simple to make and easy to embellish as desired. Just whirl all the ingredients in the blender and you’ve got a delicious superfood smoothie.
Grape smoothie Ingredients:
- 1 cup lowfat vanilla yogurt
- 2 cups red California seedless grapes
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 banana (optional)
Place all ingredients in blender. Cover and blend until smooth. Pour and serve.
Yield: Makes 1 3/4 cups.
Note: To make a green smoothie, use green California grapes instead of red, and toss in a handful of spinach leaves.

Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
