NCC to Show New Arts Exhibition
A photo essay and other images by Betty Beaumont will be exhibited at Northampton Community College (NCC) from Monday, February 16 through Saturday, March 21, in the gallery of Communications Hall, Main Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 5, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the gallery. The exhibition, Million-Woman March, includes a selection of images taken during the 1992 March for Reproductive Rights in Washington, D.C. At this time, the U.S. Supreme Court was considering a law to curtail reproductive freedom. The exhibition focuses on march participants from the Women’s Action Coalition, a group of women from the New York art world. Beaumont earned a master’s degree from the University of California (UCLA) at Berkeley and has held academic appointments at Columbia University, UCLA Berkeley, SUNY (State University of New York) at Purchase, and New York University. Her work has been on exhibit at the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and many other venues in the United States and around the world. She works in a variety of media including photography, installations, public interventions (a form of performance art which invites public interaction or alters existing art works), and new media. Her work challenges global social awareness as well as socioeconomic and ecological practices. Beaumont’s work has been reviewed by notable art historians and critics such as Nancy Princenthal and Jeffrey Kastner. The artist has received awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the University of California at Berkeley and the Creative Capital Foundation, among others. The exhibited is sponsored by the New Arts Organization located in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. NCC and New Arts have been collaborating on annual exhibits for over 25 years. The gallery in Communications Hall is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and closed in Sundays. Free Screening of “Fed Up”

“Fed Up” is a 2014 documentary film that focuses on the causes of obesity in the U.S., presenting evidence showing that the large quantities of sugar in processed foods are an overlooked root of the problem, and points to lobbying by “Big Sugar” blocking attempts to enact effective policies to address the issue. A panel discussion held after the screening includes Eric J. Ruth and Meagan L. Grega, M.D., Kellyn Foundation; Jon Soden, Bethlehem Food Co-op; Lynn Trizna, Rodale Farm Project Manager, St. Luke’s University Health Network; and Kelly Allen, associate professor of English at NCC. The screening is free and open to the public, but tickets must be reserved by calling the ArtsQuest Box Office at 610-332-3378. This screening is part of part of a year-long exploration of the theme, “Agriculture & the American Identity” at NCC. For more information about the theme and upcoming events, visit www.northampton.edu/neh or call 610-861-4176. Exploration of this year’s theme is made possible by an endowment for the humanities established through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and generous donors. FOOD.....Brighten Winter Meals with Vibrant Seasonal Ingredients
(StatePoint) Following a healthy eating plan doesn’t mean eating the same dish every day. In fact, as the seasons change, so should your meals and their ingredients, as each season offers a unique variety of fresh produce. A fresh boost of nutrients is especially important during winter, when nearly half of Americans admit they feel less healthy and energetic, and fewer than 30 percent are consuming the daily recommended amount of fruit, according to recent research by Toluna on behalf of the Florida Department of Citrus. Salads provide a fun, delicious opportunity to experiment with produce at its peak, such as Florida grapefruit. With this focus on seasonality and flavor, cookbook author Emily Richards is offering a recipe for Florida Grapefruit and Jicama Vietnamese Salad, a nice addition to serve alongside your favorite protein or fish for a balanced meal. “Including Florida grapefruit in this dish adds a welcome touch of natural sweetness,” says Richards. “Using in-season produce helps make this dish as fresh as it is flavorful.” Prep Time: 20 minutes Yield: 8 (1-cup) servings Ingredients • 1 small jicama, peeled • 3 cups shredded Napa cabbage • 2 Florida ruby red grapefruit, peeled and segmented • 1 carrot, shredded • 1 cup diced English cucumber • 3 tbsp. Florida ruby red grapefruit juice • 2 tbsp. each soy sauce and rice vinegar • 1 large clove garlic, minced • 2 tbsp. liquid honey • 2 tsp sriracha chili sauce Directions • Thinly slice jicama and stack slices. Cut into 2-inch matchstick size strips and place in a large bowl. Add cabbage, Florida grapefruit segments, carrot and cucumber. • In a small bowl, whisk together Florida grapefruit juice, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, honey and chili sauce. Pour over salad and toss to coat. Let stand 10 minutes before serving for flavors to develop. When shopping for this recipe, consider opting for Florida grapefruit, which has a unique taste due to its growing conditions. Due to their proximity to the Anastasia Formation, a geologic formation composed of sand and coquina limestone, the root systems of Florida citrus trees are able to tap into essential minerals and nutrients in the soil. This unique fertile soil combined with a lush climate provides ideal growing conditions for grapefruit to thrive, but can also result in wind scars and blemishes on the outer peel. Be careful not to judge a book by its cover at the market. More information about Florida grapefruit and additional recipes are available at www.Facebook.com/FloridaGrapefruit. This winter, make your dishes as fresh as they are flavorful. Use in-season produce to tantalize your taste buds and get a burst of nutrients that support good health.
A teenage girl has become an overnight sensation online after attaching a Jamie Oliver recipe to a job application instead of her CV. Heather McNab, 18, applied for a job as a sales negotiator at an estate agent but received the reply: "Dear Heather, You attached a Jamie Oliver for Chilli Beef Recipe not your CV."
Miss McNab, from Bridge of Allan in Scotland, saw the funny side and posted the message on Twitter, with the comment: "Worst day of my life ha ha ha." It has since been retweeted over 8,000 times, and even prompted a response from Jamie Oliver telling her she deserves the job. He added: "That stew can do anything!" Miss McNab told the Daily Mail: "People keep replying to the original tweet, telling me how it's made their day and they've never laughed so much in their life, and that's so good to hear, especially how I was so unbelievably embarrassed at first. "There's also a lot of people saying things like 'you should have got the job if you promised to make the chilli'. "If only they were right, because I'm starting to believe they may not see me as a viable candidate now. |
Pen Argyl Academic Wall of Fame Nominations
It is time for the Pen Argyl High School Alumni Association to select the 2015 Inductees to the Academic Wall of Fame.
This honor is bestowed on a select number of graduates or past district educators each year who have distinguished themselves through community service, academic accomplishments, as well as, advancements in their chosen profession. The creation of this distinction was to set an example of what is possible for all present and future Pen Argyl students! This honor is different from the PAHS Athletic Hall of Fame where chosen Alumni are honored for their athletic contributions while at Pen Argyl High School. Anyone can nominate a PAHS graduate for the Academic Wall of Fame honor. Our Academic Wall of Fame Inductees have made a meaningful contribution to the world around them, and the Pen Argyl Alumni Association is proud to bestow this honor. To nominate a graduate, please contact Jim or Heather Hunter at 610-863-9443 or send an e-mail to [email protected] The deadline for nominations is February 20, 2015. GED & Basic Skills Classes
