NCC Lineworker Program Information
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold an information session about its lineworker program on Saturday, February 24, at 5:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall, Room 130 A-D, Gates Center, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
The information session will give prospective students the opportunity to meet the instructors, learn about the program and gain information about potential sources of financial assistance for qualified candidates.
This hands-on, non-credit course is taught by instructors with linework experience and has been popular since its inception in 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical or telecommunications industries. During the 12-week course, which includes 375 hours of instruction, students learn to safely and efficiently climb 40’ utility poles, construct assemblies while on poles, use a variety of hand tools, and understand the basics of electricity.
Qualified employees in this field are in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay of line and telecommunications installers is around $54,000 a year. Employment of telecommunications and equipment installers is expected to grow 15% through 2020.
Graduates of the NCC lineworker program have been hired by PPL, Met Ed, KECO Electric and other companies. Others have gone into the Northeast Apprenticeship and Training Program, which prepares apprentices for a career in the Outside Electrical industry as journeymen lineworker members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Classes will begin in March. The cost is $4,950 and $400 for materials. Students must purchase their own safety belts and climbers.
For more information, call 610-861-5577 or e-mail [email protected].

HEALTH.....How to Protect Children During a Measles Outbreak
(StatePoint) A measles outbreak that began in late 2014 in California has since spread to multiple states. Most of those who have gotten sick from this highly infectious disease were not vaccinated against measles.
Experts are calling the current outbreak an important reminder to vaccinate children fully against the disease. “Vaccines are one of the most important ways parents can protect their children from measles and other diseases,” says Sandra Hassink, MD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). “The measles vaccine is safe, necessary and effective.” The AAP is offering some fast facts about measles and the measles vaccine. • Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads easily through the air or on infected surfaces. It causes rash, high fever, cough, runny nose and red watery eyes. In rare cases it can cause encephalitis that can lead to deafness or mental retardation. Of every 1,000 people who get measles, one or two will die. • The AAP, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Academy of Family Physicians all recommend children receive the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine at age 12-15 months, and again at four to six years old. • It’s best to protect children with MMR vaccine as soon as they are old enough to receive it. Delaying vaccination leaves children vulnerable to measles for a longer period of time. Vaccinating on time also protects other children in the community, including infants younger than 12 months who cannot be vaccinated and are most susceptible to serious illness, hospitalization and death due to measles. • Getting the measles vaccine is much safer than getting the measles infection. Like any medicine, the vaccine is capable of causing side effects but usually these are mild, such as pain or swelling at the injection site and a fever that lasts a day or two. The risk of the measles vaccine causing serious harm is extremely small. • If you are not sure if you or your children have been fully vaccinated against measles, talk with your doctor to see if anyone in your family needs to be vaccinated. There is no risk in receiving the measles vaccine if you have been immunized before. Your pediatrician is your best source of advice on vaccinations. More information about the measles and the measles vaccine can be found by talking with your pediatrician and by visiting www.healthychildren.org. When it comes to your children’s health, take control when and where you can. Experts agree that a great place to start is by ensuring your children receive the measles vaccine, as well as the full range of vaccines recommended by your pediatrician. Crows Bring Gifts To Girl Who Feeds Them A little girl who recently started feeding crows in her garden was surprised when the birds began bringing her presents in return.
The crows began bringing eight-year-old animal lover Gabi anything bright and shiny that they could find. Her collection so far features dozens of objects including buttons, paper clips, nuts, bolts, a small light bulb and even some earrings. She reportedly feeds the crow peanuts, dog food and general leftovers, but Gabi says she doesn't do it for the material rewards, but because she loves watching nature. You can hear Gabi and her mum Lisa - who live in Rome - talk about her relationship with the crows in a The BitterSweet Life podcast. Lisa reveals that the crows had once brought back her camera lens cap which she had lost while taking photographs near her home. Crow expert John Marzluff tells the podcast that crows will sometimes try to build relationships with humans that feed them.
