An Incredible Journey
by Larry Cory
After hearing the fascinating talk at the Slate Belt Heritage Center by Chris Minnich and Jamie Ratchford of Wind Gap about their seven-month hike on the Appalachian Trail - I’m ready to pack my gear and hit the trail running. That is - if the weather was much warmer and I was a bit younger. But for anyone who wants to hike the trail - go for it big time. It’s an experience you will never forget. Before you start, however, take a minute, maybe a week, maybe a month to reflect on going, because as Minnich says, “It’s not just a walk in the woods.” Minnich and Ratchford took months to plan, practice, re-plan and re-practice their trip. What to eat? What to wear? Where to stay? Where to find clean water? How to deal with the elements? What about bears? Turns out, red squirrels which chewed through their bags of food, were a greater threat than bears. Poisonous snakes - just walk around them, but other factors - water, food, shelter, illness, rocks - those were some of the huge obstacles to overcome. Even for two people in the prime of their lives and in good health - the trail was unsympathetic. At the outset in March when they began their hike in Georgia they needed time to adapt to walking long distances and deal with the vestiges of winter. They both suffered from head colds early on which slowed their pace. Jamie developed shin splints at one point and Chris had to deal with a norovirus. Then there was the weather - freezing temperatures, snow, rain, ice and the heat of summer making life on the trail more than just a little difficult. They described a scene where they saw people in sleeping bags covered with snow. “I didn’t know whether they were dead or alive,” said Chris. There is, however, a huge flip side - the reason why people make the hike. Jamie was overwhelmed by the helpful, friendly people she met along the way. She talked about how people would help get them food and shelter - people she never met before, yet so kind and thoughtful. She recalled a farm where they stayed for two days and helped with chores in exchange for something to eat and a place to sleep. Chris was enamored by what he saw during the 2,185-mile trip. “We took all the time we could to take in the beauty,” he said. The pair also talked about the great camaraderie among hikers and the “trail angels” along the way who went out of their way to help. Would they do it again? Most likely. Slate Belt Works Together

PARENTING .....Teenagers want parents to be involved in their lives
(BPT) - Today’s changing social environment and confusing messages about drugs and alcohol may be making it even more difficult for teenagers to get their bearings as they move toward adulthood. That is why it is more important than ever for parents to know what is going on in their kids’ lives and have the skills to respond to their teens appropriately.
Specifically, as drugs and alcohol are becoming more accessible and more states are legalizing marijuana, many teens may believe that the use of marijuana or other substances is now okay. Parents should know that legalization of marijuana does not mean it is harmless, and increased availability of other substances does not make them less harmful, either. Marijuana and other substances can cause permanent damage to the teenage brain, and teens can become addicted more quickly than adults. This is a time when parents need to become involved in their teens’ lives and help them navigate these complex issues. While many parents may think of their teens as grown-ups and able to fully take care of themselves, teenagers have said that this is a time when they need their parents the most. Asking questions and being involved shows teenagers that their parents care. “Even though teens may sometimes indicate otherwise, through my experience as a psychiatrist to teenagers, I have found that most of them want their parents involved in their lives to provide guidance and support,” says Dr. Thomas Wright, chief medical officer at Rosecrance, one of the country’s leading teen substance abuse treatment centers. “Teens want their parents to actively parent them and provide them guidance they need, including direction around substances.” Studies have shown that parents who play an active role in the lives of their teens can positively impact their children’s behavior and influence them to cease or abstain from ever using substances. In contrast, research shows that teens whose parents expect them to engage in risky behaviors such as drinking and using drugs are more likely to do so. “It is critical that parents understand their role and take conscious measures to support their teens in living a healthy and happy life,” Wright says. “Parents should ask what their teens are doing, address the pressures they are facing, act immediately when they suspect their teen is in trouble, and advocate for help if their teen needs it to help them live a healthy life.” Starting a conversation with a teen about substances can be daunting. It can be even more overwhelming for a parent when their teenage child approaches them with questions before they have had a chance to prepare. For a helpful guide to talking with a teenager about marijuana visit www.rosecrance.org/teens-weed.
A McDonald's customer got a fright when he spotted a haunting skull in his ice cream sundae.
The demonic apparition was caused by the shapes formed by the strawberry syrup in his ice cream. The man, thought to be from the US, posted a picture of the scary sundae on Twitter where it quickly went viral. Bonerman tweeted: "Hey McDonalds I ordered a sundae but instead you gave me the souls of the damned, did I have to pay extra for this?" |

Beginning Friday Jan. 16 through Sunday Jan. 18, 2015 you are encouraging to participate in the 3rd annual "Pay It Forward Weekend". You are asked to do at least one random act of kindness (more than one is even better). It is very easy to participate, All you have to do is something for someone or some organization without expecting anything in return: pay for a stranger’s meal, send someone a card, volunteer some time. The ideas are endless.
All it takes is a spark to get a fire going. Find them on Facebook so you can make a difference, and who knows, maybe change someone's life. Get on Board, invite all your Facebook friends to join and let's see if we can change someone's world this weekend. Who knows, it might be your life that gets changed. Last year, we had 484,743 people that accepted the invitation. More remarkable, is that 6,191,963 people saw the invitation and cause. This doesn't count the people outside of Facebook that took part. Remember, it doesn't take people doing a lot, just a lot of people doing a little. January 18

Columcille Women's Retreat Columcille's Annual Women's Retreat will once again be held at the Kirkridge Farmhouse.
Keeping with tradition, the Women of Columcille are invited to come celebrate and honor the beloved Brighid, Goddess of Fire and Water. It is also that time of year when life slowly begins to flow and move underneath. It is the return of 'Light', the beginning of Spring also known as Imbolc 'flowing of ewe's milk' when it was all agrarian society. Celebrate and prepare yourselves for the return of 'Light' once again through ceremony, song, ritual and camaraderie of all your Sistars or just take 'me' time, walk the land, meditate and reflect! In ritual, open yourselves to the loving transmuting energy of the Violet Flame, and then dive deep into the healing Sacred Water... discover how deep your connection to Water is... maybe even learn there is a Mermaid inside you! Be transformed with a powerful Divination Circle. Of course, there is play time for the 'inner child' to create and express herself with our craft time! Later they honor Brighid with a healing Fire ceremony, followed by a deeply bonding bonfire gathering with song, chants, and 'placing of cloths' for Brighid's Blessings. Then off 'steam' from all that fire work with a pulsating drumming circle! Gift yourself with the richly rewarding and fulfilling retreat experience, whether it be just one day or the whole weekend. It promises to be one of joy, growth, new friends, self-discovery and empowerment - doing 'inner work' has never been so rewarding! January 30

Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”). An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, Alive Inside’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
