Slate Belt YMCA Officially Opens Tomorrow If you are a life-long resident of the Slate Belt Belt you’ll recall informal efforts and discussions to bring a YMCA to the area were already in progress over 30 years ago.
Those plans never really gained enough resources to see the light of day. Then about 15 years ago a “dedicated” Founders Committee began to see a glimmer of hope. That glimmer has now become a shining example of hard work as the Slate Belt YMCA officially opens tomorrow. Thanks to unselfish gifts from the Scott family and a donation of $1.1 million dollars from the Green Knights Economic Development Corporation, not to mention others, the YMCA has become a reality with the completion of PHASE I of the project through fund-raising efforts netting $3.4 million. PHASE II is on deck which will include a swimming pool. Half of the $2,000,000 needed for a “bare bones” pool has been raised thus far. PHASE III would feature an indoor gym. For now, residents can take advantage of many programs including, but not limited to, child care, youth fitness, preschool, gymnastics, dance, personal training, adult fitness and the Sliver Sneakers program. The YMCA is open 5am to 9pm Monday through Friday, Saturdays from 8-6 (September through May) and 8-4, June through August. The facility is also open Sundays from Noon to 6pm from October through May. You can call them at 610-881-4470, find them on Facebook or on the web at www.greatervalleyymca.org/slate-belt The Green Knight Economic Council donated $32,009 to the Slate Belt YMCA September 2010 at GKEDC headquarters. This was the first donation made by GKEC. Future donations brought the grand total to $1.1 million. Among those attending were: (L-R) Leonard Zito, Craig Dally, (unknown) Reed Herring, Harry Smith, Dick Smith, Carlton Snyder, Steve Hurni, Denise Paraschos, Bob Cornman, Patty Guarry, Judith Piper and Richard Guarry. 2015 .....Easy ways to plan for summer fun this winter
4 (BPT) - Picture this: warm wind blowing across your face, the sound of waves crashing, and all your worries left behind on land. This is you on a boat and now is the perfect time to make this dream a reality. Winter may be frigid for many, but it’s the best time to start planning for warmer days ahead.
More than 89 million Americans go boating each year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, proving it’s easier than ever to join the fun and climb aboard. Whether you're interested in fishing, sailing, wakesurfing, personal watercraft or cruising, start planning now so you don’t get left on land this spring. Warm up this winter with these four tips: Explore boats under one roof. Throughout the winter, hundreds of boat shows take place around the country, providing deals on boats for every budget, plus a chance to browse a variety of options in one location versus visiting multiple boat dealerships. Boat shows are an opportunity for the whole family to learn and have some fun, with educational seminars and workshops, hands-on trainings, fishing demonstrations and more. Check out boatshows.com to find a boat show in your neck of the woods. Test the waters. No boat yet? No problem. There are ways to test the waters near your home or on a warm weather vacation, from hourly or daily rentals to charters and more. Another popular option is fractional ownership, similar to lodging timeshares, where members can pre-schedule use of the boat online and often receive the added benefits of lessons, flotillas and additional crew, if needed. Week-long charters are an additional option for those looking to escape to warmer weather, wake up on the water and fully experience the boating lifestyle this winter. Do your homework. Prep for summer now by doing your online research on how to get started, where to boat and what to consider before buying. Get inspired by other boaters by checking out Stories of Discovery documentaries on discoverboating.com. Your own story of discovery can start with the right boat, so take the next step towards making your daydream a reality by using a boat selector tool to match your budget, lifestyle and interests with the best boat for your needs. Learn the ropes. Education is a great way to prepare now for boating season later. Boating schools and courses are a great way to learn the rules of the water – online, in a classroom or on the water. Perfect your powerboating, sailing, fishing or watersports skills by learning the basics and having fun in the process. Check out a list of courses and find one that floats your boat close to home. This winter find ways to get out of the cold weather doldrums. DiscoverBoating.com is a resource to satisfy all your boating curiosities with a boat loan calculator to do the math, tips and how-to’s for the latest boating activities and how to get your feet wet with (or without) owning a boat. A man was so fond of his office goldfish that he paid $450 to relieve its constipation problem. The three-inch fish was taken to Toll Barn Veterinary Centre in North Walsham, Norfolk, for a delicate 50-minute operation to remove one lump close to its anus and another from its dorsal fin.
Vet Faye Bethell told the Eastern Daily Press that the man initially baulked at the hefty bill and left the building, before returning five minutes later having changed his mind. The three-year-old fish was anaesthetised, a tube inserted into its mouth, attached to a heart-rate monitor, then the lumps were removed with a tiny scalpel. Ms Bethell sewed each cut with three stitches and used a type of glue to cover and waterproof the fish's scales. "There was nothing special about the fish. He just liked it a lot. People love their pets - but that was an expensive little goldfish," commented the vet. Goldfish can be bought for around $5.00.. Willie Watson (Born September 23, 1979) is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and banjo player born in Watkins Glen, New York, who was a founding member of Old Crow Medicine Show. His debut solo album Folk Singer, Vol. I, was released in May 2014 and he appeared at the 2014 Newport Folk Festival. Raised in Upstate New York around Ithaca, he currently resides in Topanga, California. Watson's transition to solo appearance began slowly with an invitation from siblings Sean and Sara Watkins to join them on a Cayamo cruise—a "singer-songwriter, folk, rootsy festival on a ship around the Bahamas] In 2012–2013 Watson began appearing in venues in and around Venice Beach, California, making appearances with the John C. Reilly band and John Prine, and opening for acts such as Punch Brothers, Sarah Jarosz, and Dawes. Initially he was performing original music, then realized he got more out of performing the old songs—and his audience seemed to enjoy them more. In 2014 he performed at SXSW in Austin, Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, California, Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island, Pickathon Music Festival in Oregon, Fayetteville Roots Festival in Arkansas, and Steelfest in Missouri. Pay It Forward Weekend
Beginning Friday Jan. 16 through Sunday Jan. 18, 2015 you are encouraging to participate in the 3rd annual "Pay It Forward Weekend". You are asked to do at least one random act of kindness (more than one is even better). The ideas are endless.
All it takes is a spark to get a fire going. Find them on Facebook so you can make a difference, and who knows, maybe change someone's life. Get on Board, invite all your Facebook friends to join and let's see if we can change someone's world this weekend. Who knows, it might be your life that gets changed. Last year, we had 484,743 people that accepted the invitation. More remarkable, is that 6,191,963 people saw the invitation and cause. This doesn't count the people outside of Facebook that took part. Remember, it doesn't take people doing a lot, just a lot of people doing a little. January 18

Columcille Women's Retreat Columcille's Annual Women's Retreat will once again be held at the Kirkridge Farmhouse.
Keeping with tradition, the Women of Columcille are invited to come celebrate and honor the beloved Brighid, Goddess of Fire and Water. It is also that time of year when life slowly begins to flow and move underneath. It is the return of 'Light', the beginning of Spring also known as Imbolc 'flowing of ewe's milk' when it was all agrarian society. Celebrate and prepare yourselves for the return of 'Light' once again through ceremony, song, ritual and camaraderie of all your Sistars or just take 'me' time, walk the land, meditate and reflect! In ritual, open yourselves to the loving transmuting energy of the Violet Flame, and then dive deep into the healing Sacred Water... discover how deep your connection to Water is... maybe even learn there is a Mermaid inside you! Be transformed with a powerful Divination Circle. Of course, there is play time for the 'inner child' to create and express herself with our craft time! Later they honor Brighid with a healing Fire ceremony, followed by a deeply bonding bonfire gathering with song, chants, and 'placing of cloths' for Brighid's Blessings. Then off 'steam' from all that fire work with a pulsating drumming circle! Gift yourself with the richly rewarding and fulfilling retreat experience, whether it be just one day or the whole weekend. It promises to be one of joy, growth, new friends, self-discovery and empowerment - doing 'inner work' has never been so rewarding! January 30

This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).
