Walter Emery gave an interesting talk last night at the Slate Belt Heritage Center entitled the The Walking Purchase to the Walking Bridge. He explained how Edward Marshall received a small parcel of land in Portland in 1752, and a little over 100 years later, a covered bridge from Portland to Columbia N.J was built. After that bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1955, the walking bridge took its place. Sbtt Photo Larry Cory

Music in the Valley
Stroudsburg (PA) – The sounds of traditional music from a by-gone era will fill the air at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Saturday July 12 from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Supported in part by a Project Stream grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the eighth annual “Music in the Valley” will feature music on the historic farm, reminiscent of how it would have been heard in the 19th century.
A variety of groups will perform at different venues around the farm and the day will end with a jam session at 5:00. As well as performances throughout the day, there will be free hands-on sessions to provide visitors with an opportunity to take a closer look at the music and maybe even try a featured instrument.
There will be a sing-a-long, storytelling and activities for children and the young at heart! Puppeteer, Bonnie Scott, will hold puppet shows throughout the day and the One Room School will be open. Wagon rides will take place weather permitting.
There will be a seminar on traditional music presented by Tom Druckenmiller, Betty Druckenmiller and Norm Williams. A wonderful opportunity to learn the background of songs you still know and love and how the music of our country developed through the last two centuries.
The event will be held rain or shine, under tents as needed. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 3 – 12 which includes the farm tour. The farm tours will run on Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. Schedule is subject to change. Great fun for all ages, so come for a few hours or make a day of it.
