Heritage Awards for Blau and Gloria
David Blau will be receiving the 2015 Initiative Award. This is presented to an individual who has performed exemplary acts promoting and preserving heritage through "in-kind" service. He volunteered to assist with the Heritage Tour Map project in 2012 and accepted the leadership position of map designer without thought of compensation. He spent countless hours designing, drawing, questioning and instructing in order to create a map that could help the Slate Belt attract visitors. He completed the project ahead of schedule and showed patience and guidance every step of the way, making this project a huge success. Mr. Blau is a 1964 graduate of Bangor Area High School where he was a honors student. He is a 1968 graduate of Penn State University and acquired his Masters from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1970. He is an award-winning water and environmental resource planner and has spent 36 years with EDAW, an internationally recognized planning and design firm headquartered in San Francisco. He lives in California with his wife Jennifer and is now retired. Although 3000 miles away, Bangor is still foremost in his mind.
James Gloria will be receiving the 2015 Special Focus Award. This is presented to an individual who saves or conserves a tradition, artifact or a body of knowledge through educational programs, exhibits, documentation, paper, internet publication or archival preservation. He was nominated for his "Olde Home Week", "Soda shop", and "Homefront" murals, in addition to the "Wisdom Walk" in Pen Argyl. He has empowered local students by teaching research methods, mural art skills and life skills while producing professional work.
He has contributed to educational information via this media and has left the local communities with lasting documentation and archival information. Mr. Gloria graduated from Rutgers University's Mason Gross School of the Arts in 1988. Over the course of a 20 + career he completed numerous public and private commissions, including murals for the Newark Museum, The Columbus Citizens Foundation and various projects from New Jersey to North Carolina. Gloria is director of the Totts Gap Institute which he founded with his wife Angeline in 2006. He has been a resident of Upper Mt. Bethel Twsp. since 1989 along with his wife and two children. .

HOME IMPROVEMENT....Chores to Checks on To-Do List(StatePoint) Home improvement doesn’t have to be a hassle, and you don’t necessarily need an abundance of time or an expensive tool set for quick fixes. Yet, 52 percent of homeowners between the ages of 25 and 45 have unfinished tasks they need completed, and more than three-quarters of them say they don’t have enough time or money to finish their projects, according to a 2014 survey by Black+Decker.
Here are four projects you can check off your to-do list quickly and cost-effectively, leaving you more time to enjoy the weekend. Fill Wall Cracks Over time, small cracks in walls will grow bigger and more noticeable. Fix them yourself with a simple formula. Mix together one-eighth cup of baking soda and two to three drops of Krazy Glue to create a paste and fill in the crack. After a few seconds, the paste will become a hard plastic that you can sand down easily. With a touch-up of paint, the wall will look brand new. For quick touch-ups in the future, keep a spare baby jar of extra paint on hand. Create Clean Air Air conditioning units require maintenance. Use a shop-vac or long vacuum add-on to remove dust and debris that have built up in the unit during the off-season. Replace the filter to ensure clean air comes into your home. You can even add a few drops of essential oil to the filter to keep your house smelling fresh between cleanings. Tend to Trim To easily repair chipped crown molding or peeling baseboards, use a long-lasting formula, such as Krazy Glue’s new Maximum Bond Industrial Speed & Strength formula, which works quickly on wood, bonding in less than 30 seconds. Apply a few drops to broken or peeling pieces and hold them against the baseboard or molding. Beyond aesthetic fixes, you can use glue for functional repairs that can save you money, such as mending ripped rubber weather stripping. A few drops of glue can improve energy efficiency in your home by keeping cool air in and summer warmth out. Deep Clean Decks Your yard may have taken a beating over the last several months. Deck maintenance usually costs less than $100 a year, but replacing a deck completely could take up to $10,000 from your pockets. Maintain a tidy backyard deck by removing all leaves and twigs between the floorboards and scrubbing down the surface with a deck cleaning solution. For a cost-effective, DIY mixture, simply mix bleach and water. Freshen up the surface with a wood stain or sealant to prevent it from rotting. Your deck is the perfect place for entertaining and summer cookouts, so it’s important to keep it looking its best From small indoor fixes to large outdoor tasks, you don’t need to a lot of time, skills or money for many home improvement projects that can help you maintain an enjoyable living space. Motorist Cited For Car of BeesThe MHP said troopers responded May 22 to a road near Missoula on a report of "a vehicle driving all over the road" and they found the motorist was transporting five hives of bees that were being allowed to move freely around the inside of the car. The driver said the insects were "harmless" Russian honey bees. The state apiarist was consulted and told troopers that while the motorist's method of transporting the bees was "very unsafe," it did not require a permit. The driver was cited for careless driving, the MHP said. Ask The Doc........
Let's Talk Adjectives
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com Invisible, comfortable, corrective, clear, precise, inexpensive, beautifying, and empowering. I bet you rarely think of those adjectives, and dentistry in the same sentence. However, that is exactly what you get with one of dentistry’s latest tools. I’m talking about Invisalign, clear aligner therapy to place your teeth in the proper position for a life –time of good oral health. This comfortable way to align teeth is proving to be very successful, and at Family Dental Care, Dr. Gary Williams, and staff are seeing such good results, that we think it deserves special attention. We are reserving 10 spots, on April 23rd, for those interested in improving their oral health. I believe so much in this treatment, that on that day, I will “pitch-in” and pay for some of your treatment. Together, you and I can give you the smile that you have always wanted. Call soon, appointment spots are limited. (610)863-8988. Slate Belt Senior Center
