Man Jailed for Posing Salt for Meth
Travis George, the Maryborough, Queensland, man's lawyer, said his client was jailed when police performing a routine check of his car discovered a substance theysuspected to be crystal methamphetamine.
George said his client was remanded to custody due to his criminal history and he was held for four months before investigators with Queensland Health's Forensic and Scientific Services at the John Tonge Center discovered the suspected crystal meth was actually Epsom salt.
"The charges were then withdrawn by police," The Fraser Coast Chronicle quoted George as saying.
George detailed the case in support of Maryborough Magistrate John Smith's complaints about long delays when dealing with the John Tonge Center. Smith said one of his cases was adjourned for two months pending the outcome of testing.
"It has always been a concern for our clients about delay due to awaiting analysis where it is forensic," George said.
A Queensland Health spokeswoman denied any lengthy delays for Forensic and Scientific Services.
"Urgent cases are completed within the time frame required by the police and the courts," she said. "All forensic testing performed at FSS is prioritized daily with police and the courts."

Fishermen Find Kittens Swimming in Lake
Jason Frost, who posted the video to Facebook, was fishing Saturday on the Warrior River with friend Brandon Key when they heard a splash and saw something swimming toward them from shore.
Frost said he and Key were unsure of the mystery animal's identity until it let out a "meow" and got close enough for them to tell it was a small kitten.
The men pulled the kitten up into their boat, where it shook off the water.
"Never in my life have I seen anything like that," Frost says in the video.
The men then noticed a second, identical kitten jump into the water from the shore and swim toward them. The men steered their boat toward the second feline and picked it up.
"Well there's a first time for everything, isn't there?" Frost says.
Frost said the kittens were friendly and seemed comfortable with riding in the boat.
"People were looking at us out on the water like, 'Oh my God, these people got cats with them,'" Frost told AL.com.
Frost said he and Key gave the kittens to a family on the shore with two young girls.
"Everybody always has a crazy fishing story, and that's all it is, is a story," he said. "If I wouldn't have had this on video, everybody would have thought I was crazy."
EDUCATION....
Truths about College Course Materials
Yes, these headlines may be sensational, but they’re not entirely accurate. While college can be expensive, students aren’t helpless victims crushed by debt from buying textbooks. Instead, they’re savvy consumers to whom education companies cater. Below are seven fictions -- and the corresponding facts -- about college course materials.
Fiction: The cost of college textbooks and course materials is a major contributor to student debt.
Fact: Books and supplies account for just four percent of college costs. Students’ primary expenses are tuition (43 percent) and boarding (40 percent).
Fiction: The cost of course materials is climbing.
Fact: Student spending on course materials has declined nearly 20 percent since the 2007-2008 school year and nearly 12 percent since 2013-2014, according to Student Watch data. New digital learning platforms, which use interactive techniques to help students master course concepts, have also helped reduce costs.
Fiction: College course materials are unaffordable for the average student.
Fact: Students can save money on textbooks in a variety of ways. Online resources such asCourseSmart offer digital titles at up to 60 percent below the hardcover price. Other money-saving options include purchasing eChapters, loose-leaf editions, black-and-white editions and print-it-yourself editions.
Fiction: The reason that new editions of course materials are released so often is to increase publisher profits.
Fact: Course materials in many fields -- especially medicine, law and accounting -- are updated periodically to reflect changes in regulations, technology and methods. Instructors want course materials to be as current as possible to ensure students can apply their knowledge to real-world situations.
Fiction: Since Open Educational Resources (OER) are free, they will eventually replace purchased textbooks.
Fact: While free to students, OER are not free to create, since they must be developed, formatted and regularly revised. Commercial producers and open-source publishers often work together to provide effective, affordable course materials. However, producing materials for a single course can cost anywhere from $500,000 to $3 million. Increasingly, OER publishers are trying to transfer these costs to students and taxpayers.
Fiction: Students with print-related disabilities -- including blindness and dyslexia -- don’t have access to the course materials they need.
Fact: Access is improving, thanks to programs like the AccessText Network. Founded and supported by the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and leading education companies, they are working to ensure that students are not limited by disability when accessing and using course materials. Students should visit their colleges’ Disabled Student Services office for information about participating.
Fiction: Students don’t really need the course materials to pass the class.
Fact: Course materials are a key component of academic success. Academic improvement from using digital course materials and traditional textbooks is as high as 79 percent.

The story is about a young girl on a trip to a local pumpkin patch and how her choice of a pumpkin ostracizes her from her peers.
Her producing team are all Pennsylvania natives. They decided to return to their hometown area to film because they love Pennsylvania and want to bring support to the local community. They are currently crowd-funding through the website Seed&Spark. They are 37% funded toward their goal of $11,000. Famed Steam Engine Coming to Area
Nickel
Plate Road (NKP) #765, a 2-8-4
Berkshire-type steam locomotive will roll into The Historic Dansbury Depot in East Stroudsburg on
Labor Day.
Six hundred riders are expected on this trip as Steamtown National Historic Site and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society will partner with Norfolk Southern’s 21st Century Steam program to operate two special summer steam excursions! Nickel Plate Road (NKP) #765, a 2-8-4 Berkshire-type steam locomotive, owned by the Fort Wayne group, will operate Saturday, September 5 to Delaware Water Gap and Monday, September 7, to Dansbury Depot in East Stroudsburg. NKP #765 is a “sister” locomotive to Steamtown’s NKP #759 locomotive, on static display inside the park’s Roundhouse. Tickets will be sold online only, at http://fortwaynerailroad.org/ Historic steam locomotive no. 765 is a high-stepping, fourteen-wheeled, magnificent machine that stands 15 feet tall, weighs 404 tons, goes over 60 miles an hour and restored to the way it looked and sounded when it was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1944. These were precision machines forged and crafted from solid steel. They meant something to those who worked in their shadow. Make no mistake, however, these iron horses, so often romanticized, take hard, unwieldy work to corral and maintain. They lived and breathed, had voices and moods, and hummed with an audible heartbeat; they were the most human of all our inventions. The 765 is one of a famous class of steam locomotives called the Berkshire; one known for its super power technology and aesthetic charm. The men and women of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society saved the 765 from becoming a rusting monument in a city park and restored it to operating condition in 1979. For fourteen years thereafter, the 765 would run special excursion trains around the country to the delight of 100,000 passengers. From 1993 to 2005, the 765 was completely rebuilt, and is now more than ready to reach another hundred thousand people. Food and entertainment will be available throughout the town and at the depot. Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
