Elk Charges Hunter's Car
Loveland resident Matt Dixon, who spends about 30 days a year hunting elk, said he was driving in Estes Park with his wife, Melissa, and their two young children when a bull elk targeted their car.
"He came up from here and just started charging at us as he came," Dixon told KDVR-TV.
Dixon said the car was about 40 yards away from the elk when it started to charge."We were trying to keep our distance. You know, we don't want to teach the kids like, 'Oh you go up to them and take pictures. They're wild animals,'" Dixon said.
Melissa Dixon posted pictures of the damage to the car's driver's side door on Facebook.
AGRICULTURE....
Perspectives to Shape the Future of Food
In a constantly evolving economy, America’s farmers, ranchers and rural leaders face what experts call a daunting task: growing the food an expanding urban population needs and making sure that they’re able to continue doing so.
“The future success of the agricultural industry relies on innovative leadership,” says Leigh Picchetti, senior vice president of national communications for the Farm Credit Council, which represents the nationwide network of Farm Credit lenders that provide financial services and loans to rural communities and agriculture.
To recognize those in the industry who are changing the future of rural enterprise and agriculture, and to celebrate its 100th Anniversary, Farm Credit has launched Farm Credit 100 Fresh Perspectives, a nationwide initiative to honor 100 leaders and innovators from across the country whose insights and influence are ensuring thriving rural communities for years to come.
“This is a national search, and we’ve already received nominations from 40 states representing both urban leaders like chefs and academicians and rural producers farming the land,” says Picchetti. “We know there are additional worthy leaders out there and we’re hoping to receive many more nominations.”
Individuals, couples and groups are eligible for nomination in 10 categories. Ten of the 100 honorees will receive a $10,000 award to help further their leadership contributions, along with a trip for themselves and a guest to Washington, D.C., in 2016 to participate in a special recognition event.
A panel of experts will evaluate the nominations, which can be submitted by anyone and are being accepted now through December 18, 2015. Winners will be announced in March 2016 in conjunction with National Ag Day.
Farm Credit 100 Fresh Perspectives categories include:
• Rural and Urban Connection
• Mentoring and Volunteerism
• Agriculture Education and Community Impact
• Rural Policy Influence
• Leadership (over 21)
• Youth Leadership (21 and younger)
• Beginning Farmer or Rancher Achievement
• Entrepreneurship and Innovation
• Sustainability and Natural Resource Conservation
• Financial Stewardship
To learn more or make a nomination, visit www.FarmCredit100.com.
The agricultural industry, perhaps more than any other, must constantly evolve in order to keep pace with a changing world. Consumers can thank top agricultural movers and shakers who are helping the industry stay up-to-date.

Apple Festival at Faith Church
Pen Argyl, PA, October 2015: On Saturday October 3, 2015 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Faith United Presbyterian Church will hold its 21st annual Apple Festival. This long running fall event has been the benefactor of one of the largest apple crops in recent memory. Our long time Slate Belt lovers of homemade apple pies and famous apple dumplings are in for a real treat because of this bountiful crop. So to celebrate this year’s Festival, the food menu will include all those old time favorites like turkey and beef barbeque, our baked beans, and the ever popular macaroni & cheese dish.
This year the Festival Committee didn’t forget any of the popular salad offerings and made sure they were on the menu. The large harvest also allows us to feature homemade apple sauce from an old and trusted Faith Church recipe that will tempt you into purchasing a bowl to taste what old time goodness is about. Don’t forget that all of the Festival’s homemade apple pies and dumplings (with or without raisins) go fast and will only be available for take out on a first come, first served basis. So get there early for the best selection. Reverend Ruth Ann Christopher added, “I particularly can’t wait to try that old time apple sauce recipe. It’s really great that there was such a large crop of apples this year so it could be made.” Join Faith Church on Saturday on October 3rd and enjoy the first fruits of this outstanding apple harvest season made into some of the finest desserts. There will be so many delicious apple offerings that you may have to visit the dessert area more than once. Remember that calories are not counted at any of Faith Church’s festivals so you can make that extra trip and enjoy dessert without guilt. Additional information and directions to the Festival is available on Faith Church’s website. www.faithunited.net. Annual Harvest Festival
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm celebrates their 41st Annual Harvest Festival on October 10th and 11th, 2015. This year’s theme is “Green is our Valley – Homesteading.” Many families in the United States are becoming interested in doing more for themselves. They are learning about everything from raising chickens in their backyard to tapping maple trees to make their own syrup. Everyone is interested in buying local produce or growing it on their own. Solar energy, windmills and other energy saving methods are topics of interest. People are having bee hives or using cloth napkins, dehydrating their own fruit or making a compost pile. It all sounds like the Quiet Valley way of doing things. Thinking green, being green, keeps it green. We hope with this year’s theme visitors will learn something they can take home and use that will make them a little more self-sufficient and our world a brighter shade of green.
In addition to demonstrations and displays dealing with the theme, there will be plenty of traditional skills and heritage crafts demonstrated such as spinning, weaving, broom making, scrapple making, apple butter making, basket making, candle making. There will also be plenty of folk entertainment, good country food, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating, a quilt raffle, pony rides, horse drawn wagon rides, one room schoolhouse presentation, outdoor brick bake oven and much more. The New Jersey Frontier Guard will portray French and Indian War soldiers trekking through the farm. The Civil War Encampment is always a favorite at Harvest Festival. The 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. G Re-enactors will portray the drill and everyday life of soldiers in the 19th century giving visitors a special glimpse into local history. DETAILS - Harvest Festival offers visitors of all ages two days of old-fashion fun. All funds raised will help support the mission of our nonprofit educational organization. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is located 3 miles south of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania off of Business Route 209. Speaker Series: Anita Collins, Ph.D. Lehigh Gap Nature Center
For over 100 years, twenty miles of the north side of the Kittatinny Ridge was denuded because of heavy metal and acid rain contamination from the NJ Zinc Company plant in Palmerton. Attempts to remediate that damage were unsuccessful until members of Lehigh Gap Nature Center proposed the use of native grasses to initiate restoration of soils and stabilization of the contaminants. Within a few years the effectiveness of this approach was evident. Now LGNC is the center of active recreation, education, conservation and research activity, almost all of it carried out by volunteers. Registration is required.
Kittatinny Ridge Hike
Join us for this hike on the Kittatinny Ridge as we enjoy the fall colors and watch for migrating raptors. Participants should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring water, snacks and binoculars. Registration is required.

(BELOW IS A STORY THAT APPEARED IN THIS PAPER AUGUST 4, 2015) Bangor High graduate Karen (Shoemaker) Katchur has published The Secrets of Lake Road (Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Press) . Karen Katchur -- Official Author Website . In her book, Jo has been hiding the truth about her role in her high school boyfriend’s drowning for sixteen years. Every summer, she drops her children off with her mother at the lakeside community where she spent summers growing up, but cannot bear to stay herself; everything about the lake reminds her of the guilt she feels. For her daughter Caroline, however, the lake is a precious world apart; its familiarity and sameness comforts her every year despite the changes in her life outside its bounds. At twelve years old and caught between childhood and adolescence, she longs to win her mother’s love and doesn’t understand why Jo keeps running away. Then seven-year-old Sara Starr goes missing from the community beach. Rescue workers fail to uncover any sign of her—but instead dredge up the bones Jo hoped would never be discovered, shattering the quiet lakeside community’s tranquility. Caroline was one of the last people to see Sara alive on the beach, and feels responsible for her disappearance. She takes it upon herself to figure out what happened to the little girl. As Caroline searches for Sara, she uncovers the secrets her mother has been hiding, unraveling the very foundation of everything she knows about herself and her family in this riveting novel that is impossible to put down and hard to forget. Karen Katchur holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from West Chester University and a Masters of Education degree in Health and Physical Education from East Stroudsburg University. She lives in Eastern Pennsylvania with her husband and two children. She enjoys running and tennis and playing with her flat coat retriever puppy, Tucker and her cat, Carly. |

Technology can be wonderful!
garywilliamsdmd.com
I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing.
Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making.
I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile.
It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry.
Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com.
