Book review.....Dark Matter
book by Blake Crouch review by Jill Silvius Dark Matter by Blake Crouch is a challenge to categorize, which is part of its appeal. Initially, it reads like a thriller: Mediocre physics professor Jason Dessen, on his way back from buying ice cream for an evening with his artist wife Daniela and teenage son Charlie, is violently abducted by a masked man who forces him to drive to an abandoned warehouse and strip naked. Then it morphs into science fiction. A terrified Jason finds himself thrust into what could have been his own creation, had he thrown his energies into his scientific research and pursuit of the coveted Pavia Prize rather than a family: a multiverse. The novel’s title comes from a closely related concept: a new form of matter that many astrophysicists believe makes up much of the known universe and holds stars and galaxies together. Escaping violence, Jason shelters himself inside a large box opening into an endless corridor of doors, each opening onto a different path he could have taken – or did take – in his life. The quantum mechanics principles behind this infinite splintering of realities is too complex for the average reader to understand (and Crouch uses very few pages about Schrodinger’s cat and “the Copenhagen interpretation” to attempt to explain it), but he/she will likely forge ahead as I did because I cared for Jason by this point in the book. What had happened to him? Why? What would happen to him? Could he ever find his way back to his beloved family? After multiple doors – and the horrors of Chicago reduced to apocalyptic ash, the sight of Daniela murdered, then ravaged by disease, and the hero’s discovery that the multiverse has spawned countless Jasons along with countless choices – the book takes another turn of genre. The enduring strength of the protagonist’s bond with his wife and his visceral need to find her, keep her safe, and convince her that he – not a second Jason who has taken his place – is really her husband become the book’s main focus. In some ways, Dark Matter at its truest heart is a love story. The novel is a rapid read due to its frantic pace, layering of urgent questions (for the reader and Jason), and Crouch’s writing style (long passages of one-sentence or one-phrase paragraphs). A quick, crazy ride that will keep you pondering What if? long after Jason accepts that he is merely “one facet of an infinitely faceted being called Jason Dessen who has made every possible choice and lived every life imaginable.” (One drawback: frequent use of the “f” word).

Alexander Graham Bell patents the telephone - 1876 On this day in 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention–the telephone. The Scottish-born Bell worked in London with his father, Melville Bell, who developed Visible Speech, a written system used to teach speaking to the deaf. In the 1870s, the Bells moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where the younger Bell found work as a teacher at the Pemberton Avenue School for the Deaf.
While in Boston, Bell became very interested in the possibility of transmitting speech over wires. With the help of Thomas A. Watson, a Boston machine shop employee, Bell developed a prototype. In this first telephone, sound waves caused an electric current to vary in intensity and frequency, causing a thin, soft iron plate–called the diaphragm–to vibrate. These vibrations were transferred magnetically to another wire connected to a diaphragm in another, distant instrument. When that diaphragm vibrated, the original sound would be replicated in the ear of the receiving instrument. Three days after filing the patent, the telephone carried its first intelligible message–the famous “Mr. Watson, come here, I need you”–from Bell to his assistant. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours. Not wanting to be shut out of the communications market, Western Union Telegraph Company employed Gray and fellow inventor Thomas A. Edison to develop their own telephone technology. Special Future Events - See BelowCLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARCan You Believe It?April the pregnant giraffe's webcam goes viral (UPI) -- An animal park in upstate New York has gone viral with a streaming video of a pregnant giraffe named April. The Animal Adventure Park is located outside of Binghamton, N.Y. and is home to two giraffes, expectant mother April and a bull, Oliver, who is the father. A webcam set up to monitor April's pregnancy has drawn millions of views, mostly of April standing tall in her indoor home, munching on hay with a noticeably enlarged belly.
Jordan Patch, the park's owner, said he has received calls and emails from people around the country and outside the United States, inquiring about where to travel to visit the park. Animal Adventure Park is closed for the winter. Patch told The New York Times he set up the livestream to allow curious residents in the area to monitor April's pregnancy on their own and stem the steady stream of phone calls and emails from Southern Tier residents curious about her progress. But with the webcam logging nearly 80,000 simultaneous visitors as of Saturday afternoon, the idea has had the opposite effect for Patch. "I'm answering a lot more emails now than I was before," he said. "It's absolutely overwhelming. We are inundated with messages and emails, media interviews and requests." Giraffes have a gestation period of 15 months. Patch had initially forecast a due date for the calf in January or February, but now concedes that was incorrect, meaning April could give birth at any time. The park will only keep the calf until April is done nursing, at which point arrangements will be made to transfer it to another facility to avoid incestuous mating. Your Backyard...Check off your backyard bucket list: seed, weed and feed (BPT) - From Sunday picnics and impromptu barbecues to games of catch, make your lawn center stage this spring. Everyone longs for a lush, green lawn, but many homeowners aren’t sure how to achieve it. In fact, although 81 percent of Americans do their own lawn care, 69 percent say their lawns could be better, and nearly a third aren’t sure how to grow a healthy lawn, according to a survey by the National Association of Landscape
Professionals. A strong, green lawn can give back to you in so many ways and getting there is easier than you think. The lawn health experts at Scotts(R) say the keys to a great lawn are seed, weed and feed. Seed Did winter do a number on your lawn? Heavy foot traffic, plows, snow shovels and salt can damage your turf, and after the first melt visible dirt spots and dead zones may appear. When spring temperatures reach 60 degrees or higher, seeds will germinate best and it’s time to repair winter damage. Patch and repair your lawn to fill in bare spots, help crowd out weeds and strengthen your grass to help withstand heat and drought. Start by removing debris and dead grass in the surrounding area, and loosen hard soil, this will help grass seedlings take root. Evenly apply a quality seed, like Scotts(R) EZ Seed(R), so the bare area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible. Be sure to only apply the recommended amount so that seedlings have enough space to access water and nutrients. Scotts(R) EZ Seed(R) is a combination of fertilizer, grass seed and super absorbent mulch that is guaranteed to grow grass anywhere with proper care, whether on a hill or slope, or in a densely-shaded area. Weed Preserve your healthy and beautiful lawn by keeping it free of weeds. Common weeds like dandelions and clover can choke out healthy grass. Therefore, it’s important to address weeds in spring so they won’t have a chance to thrive in summer. Removing weeds can be a challenge, especially if any roots are left behind as they can quickly grow into a new plant. Get rid of weeds by using a weed-control product like the improved Scotts(R) Turf Builder(R) Weed & Feed. It is formulated with up to two times more powerful control of dandelions and clover compared to the previous formula, so it kills weeds and feeds grass to make it green and thick. Feed Continuing to feed your established lawn is critical to its nutrition and overall success. Your lawn requires feeding about every six weeks, and its nutritional needs will vary throughout the season. Choosing the right food at the right time can help ensure your lawn stays thick and green all spring and summer. For example, if your yard needs a boost towards the end of spring use Scotts(R) Green Max(RM) Lawn Food, it provides your lawn with essential nutrients, like iron, that give grass its rich green color in just three days. No two lawns are alike. A number of factors including where you live or whether you have a sunny or shady backyard affect how to treat your grass. Not sure which products are right? Download the MyLawn app from Scotts(R) for a personalized care plan that will help you achieve your desired results. To make the most out of your green space, visit www.scotts.com for inspiration and information on lawn care products. Education...Tips to Land a College Scholarship (StatePoint) If you are college-bound or already enrolled, experts say it’s worth investing the time to investigate scholarship opportunities -- even if you think you may not be eligible for most opportunities. According to a recent study, more than a third of college costs in the U.S. were covered by scholarships and grants in the 2015-2016 academic year.
“Scholarship money doesn’t have to be paid back, and it can significantly reduce out-of-pocket college costs for families,” says Martha Holler, senior vice president at Sallie Mae, who also points out that scholarships are not just for star football players and valedictorians. From scholarships for dart players and vegetarians to filmmakers and those fluent in Klingon, available awards run the gamut and extend well beyond academics or athletics to a wide range of activities, interests, and affiliations. “Have a passion for designing greeting cards? There’s a scholarship for that! Interested in helping people understand the perils of texting when driving? There’s a scholarship for that too,” says Holler. With this in mind, Holler and the experts at Sallie Mae are offering the following scholarship tips. • Be thorough. Don’t overlook smaller scholarships. Even a few hundred dollars can help offset the cost of textbooks and supplies. • Be proactive. Apply for scholarships every year. Approximately 50 percent of available scholarships are for students already enrolled in college. • Be diligent. Pay attention to details. Follow instructions and proofread carefully. • Be careful. Never pay for scholarships or for scholarship searches. School counselors and school financial aid offices can recommend reputable options. One such site is Scholarship Search by Sallie Mae, a free scholarship search tool that is home to five million scholarships valued at $24 billion dollars. The tool responds with matches that identify relevant scholarships and their award amounts, application requirements, and deadlines, and it automatically sends updates when it identifies new matches. Those who register are automatically eligible to win the Plan for College Sweepstakes, which awards $1,000 each month to a winner selected at random. • Be on time. Meet deadlines. If an application can’t be submitted electronically, use certified mail. Stay organized and ahead of deadlines by using automated calendar alerts. For more scholarship tips, visit SallieMae.com/ScholarshipSearch. College scholarships come in all shapes and sizes and billions of dollars are awarded each year. By applying to all the scholarships for which you are eligible, you can be sure you are not passing up any opportunity to reduce your potential debt down the line. BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement. Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to [email protected] Letters to Homefront Magazine
