Dealing w/Delayed Soreness

Picture
(NAPSI)—According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to stay healthy, adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as brisk walking every week, as well as muscle-strengthening activities on two or more days a week that work all major muscle groups.Fortunately, you don’t have to let a few aches and pains put you off your exercise routine. According to Dr. Jonathan Folland, an expert in neuromuscular physiology from Britain’s Loughborough University, many people, whatever their fitness level, experience muscle pain a day or two after exercising.
What Is DOMS?
DOMS, also known as delayed onset muscle soreness, is perfectly normal, doesn’t last long, and may even be a sign of your improving fitness. DOMS can occur when you start a new exercise, change your routine, or increase the duration or intensity of your regular workout. It typically lasts three to five days and the discomfort, which can range from mild to severe, usually occurs one or two days after the exercise.
What Causes DOMS?
When muscles are asked to work harder than they are used to, or in a different way, it can cause microscopic damage to the muscle fibers, resulting in muscle soreness or stiffness. The good news is that the pain will decrease as your muscles get used to the new physical demands being placed upon them. The soreness is simply part of an adaptation process that leads to greater stamina and strength as the muscles recover and build.
How to Avoid DOMS
One of the best ways to prevent DOMS is to start any new activity gently and gradually. Allowing your muscles time to adapt to new movements should help minimize the soreness.
What to Do About DOMS
DOMS does not generally require medical intervention. Over-the-counter pain relievers should do the trick. Many people with DOMS or other mild pain may be excited to learn that Salonpas, the manufacturer of the popular Salonpas Lidocaine 4% Pain Relieving Gel-Patch, has just launched two new Lidocaine products. The Salonpas Lidocaine Plus Pain Relieving Cream and Salonpas Lidocaine Plus Pain Relieving Liquid (with a convenient roll-on applicator) both contain two powerful anesthetics: long-lasting lidocaine and fast-acting benzyl alcohol. Together, these ingredients desensitize aggravated nerves for temporary relief of back, neck, shoulder, knee and elbow pain. All three Salonpas Lidocaine products contain 4% lidocaine, which is the maximum amount of lidocaine available without a prescription.
Doctor’s Advice
“I have been using the new Salonpas Lidocaine Plus products to address knee and elbow pain after my rigorous workouts and found that the cream and liquid worked effectively,” said award-winning journalist Dr. Bob Arnot, M.D., internal medicine, who is an author of 12 books on nutrition and health, host of the “Dr. Danger” reality TV series, and previously Chief Medical Correspondent for NBC and CBS News, and Chief Foreign Correspondent for MSNBC and NBC. As a Paddleboard World Championship award winner, Dr. Arnot knows about the aches and pains of athletics.

Hidden Money Public Hearing
This past summer, Rep. Joe Emick joined a group of rank-and-file state legislators to uncover more than $3 billion in special fund accounts and fund balances they hoped to use to support the state budget as an alternative to tax increases. They’ve also discovered transfers of money in May that involved attempts to hide revenue from legislators and the public.

The money became part of a budget bill that passed the House but not the Senate. The Representatives were promised future hearings on these controversial sources of revenue, and the House Appropriations Committee is prepared to investigate our claims.
This Thursday, Dec. 7, the committee will conduct a public hearing on the special funds related to the Department of Transportation. You can watch that hearing on Rep. Emrick's website, www.RepEmrick.com, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Subsequent hearings are scheduled for the following week.

Winter Fest at Dansbury Depot
Dec. 9 1-5:30 PM  Tree lighting at 5:30 PM
The Annual Winter Fest and Tree Lighting at The Historic Dansbury Depot in East Stroudsburg is a wonderful event where young and old will find a variety of activities to help celebrate this special season. The tree lighting will take place at 5:30 PM. Activities begin at 1.  A Santa Train will run at 12 and 2.  A dinner will be served on the 4 o’clock train.  The event will be filled with music, refreshments, craft making, and horse and carriage rides. Pony rides will be available weather permitting.  Kidz Krafts, a silent auction, and a model train display will be inside the depot. Great Christmas gifts will be available for sale at the vendor booths.  One may want to visit the restored depot and see first-hand the prized treasure that has been restored to its former glory. Also on site, is the only remaining wooden Railroad Switch Tower on the Delaware Lackawanna line. Visit the tower to observe how the switches were used to control movement of the trains in the area. At5:00, singing and music will lead up to the tree lighting that will occur at 5:30.
Come and join the festivities but think about less fortunate people, too. .A collection of canned and dry foods will be collected for the Salvation Army at the depot during the month of December. Items may be brought to the festival or delivered to the depot from 9AM to Noon on week days.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - December 3

A Streetcar Named Desire opens on Broadway  1947

On this day in 1947, Marlon Brando’s famous cry of “STELLA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire.   The 23-year-old Brando played the rough, working-class Polish-American Stanley Kowalski, whose violent clash with Blanche DuBois (played on Broadway by Jessica Tandy), a Southern belle with a dark past, is at the center of Williams’ famous drama. Blanche comes to stay with her sister Stella (Kim Hunter), Stanley’s wife, at their home in the French Quarter of New Orleans; she and Stanley immediately despise each other. In the climactic scene, Stanley rapes Blanche, causing her to lose her fragile grip on sanity; the play ends with her being led away in a straitjacket.
Streetcar, produced by Irene Mayer Selznick and directed by Elia Kazan, shocked mid-century audiences with its frank depiction of sexuality and brutality onstage. When the curtain went down on opening night, there was a moment of stunned silence before the crowd erupted into a round of applause that lasted 30 minutes. On December 17, the cast left New York to go on the road. The show would run for more than 800 performances, turning the charismatic Brando into an overnight star. Tandy won a Tony Award for her performance, and Williams was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
