The First 25

Picture
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
So, you finish your career training, ready to go to work, and someone says to you, “enjoy yourself, ‘cause the time is going to fly.” And you think to yourself, “yeah, right!” And then it happens. Suddenly one day I find myself writing an article about practicing dentistry in my home town for 25 years…and counting. I can’t believe it.
Family Dental Care began in a renovated apartment, here on South Robinson Ave., in Pen Argyl, in 1989. When the door opened that first morning, there were a grand total of zero patients of record. And I have been blessed ever since.
We have cared for your families over the years and catered a lot to your children. Now, not that I’m aging or anything; but now I treat your grandchildren…and more. Where did the time go?
We still love seeing your children after 25 years. That’s why we offer free dental exams to all kids under the age of 3 years. We’ve learned some of what makes for good oral health, and we still love to care for the little ones, and watch them grow up in our practice. Yes, time flies when you are having fun, and so far, it’s been a hoot! Stay tuned for announcements about our special “Sealant Day”.
Thank you Slate Belt residents and kids. Looking forward to the next 25!

TRAVEL..........

Four out of 10 drivers don't know this
dashboard warning could save their lives

Picture
When it comes to tire pressure safety, many drivers fall flat in connecting this all-important safety concern with the dashboard icon that could alert them to a problem, a new national survey shows. With an estimated 245 million cars and light trucks on U.S. roadways, driver safety concerns are top-of-mind among consumers. In fact, 95 percent of drivers consider vehicle safety features an important issue when shopping for a car. Unfortunately, when it comes to recognition of lifesaving vehicle dashboard icons, many drivers are unaware, uninformed and unprepared.
Four out of 10 drivers are unable to identify the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning symbol located on vehicles' dashboards and don't know what the icon is when they see it, according to a new consumer survey conducted on behalf of Schrader International. However, nearly 90 percent of drivers think properly inflated tires and paying attention to an automatic warning system could save their lives.
This demonstrates a drastic disconnect between what drivers consider crucial to their safety and their actual ability to recognize the tire pressure warning symbol. The need for additional education is clear. Fortunately, there are already more than 104 million vehicles in the U.S. now equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, and 91 percent of the entire U.S. vehicle population is expected to be TPMS-equipped by 2023.
So, what does the TPMS alert mean for drivers? The TPMS vehicle dashboard icon is a crucial safety warning symbol that indicates one or more of a vehicle's tires are significantly underinflated by more than 25 percent. Underinflated tires can impair a car's ability to maneuver and brake properly. This means a driver whose TPMS light appears is three times more likely to be involved in a crash related to tire problems than a vehicle with proper inflation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA also reports underinflated tires are estimated to cause: 200,000 accidents, 660 highway fatalities and 33,000 injuries annually, as well as 3.5 million gallons of gasoline wasted daily.
To help raise awareness about TPMS and the importance of proper tire pressure, Schrader, the leading global manufacturer of sensing and valve solutions and pioneer of TPMS, along with OEM car manufacturers, aftermarket retailers, and state and federal governments, are dedicating resources toward consumer education. Schrader has provided the online resource TPMSMadeSimple.com for complete insight into TPMS and the benefits of maintaining proper tire pressure.
If the TPMS icon appears, your tires are sending you a very important message: one or more of your tires are significantly underinflated and you or an auto service technician needs to take a closer look as soon as possible.
When this occurs, exercise caution and do the following:
* Find a safe place to pull off the road to check your tire pressure. Keep a tire gauge with your set of emergency items in your vehicle.
* If the light comes on while driving at highway speed, immediately grab hold of the steering wheel with both hands in case you are experiencing a blow-out (rapid deflation) scenario. Slowly decelerate to a safe speed and find a safe place to pull off the road to check your tire pressure.
* Once checked, if the tires all appear normal, proceed carefully to the nearest gas station or tire service center to add air to your tire(s).
* If needed, have the problem tire or tires and the TPMS system serviced at your nearest tire service center.
The TPMS icon should turn off within several minutes after inflating the tires to their recommended pressure.

  • Falconer learns to fly like his birds

Picture
A Devon falconer is so obsessed with birds of prey that he has learned to fly just like them.
Jonathan Marshall has reared the fearsome hunters all of his life but recently decided standing on the ground and looking up was not enough.
He has now taken up paragliding and hang gliding to soar across the coastline near his home whenever the conditions are right.
But he admits to being jealous of his Harris Hawk and Peregrine Falcon which can fly whenever they like.
Along with learning how to fly, he has also taught Samson - a nine-year-old Golden Eagle who he rescued - how to take to the skies.
Mr Marshall said: "The paragliding and the hand gliding give you the ability to experience what it's like to fly like the birds.
"Sometimes when I try to fly the wind does not work for me and I reckon the birds have a laugh at me.
"I reckon they think what the hell are you waiting for but as humans we are stuck on the floor."
Mr Marshall, who lives with his partner and two children, added: "I think I'm incredibly lucky to share my life with these beautiful creatures."
His story is one of several which features in new Animal Planet series Preposterous Pets, which continues on Thursday, 17 April at 8pm.

April Activities at Jacobsburg

Speaker Series: Dawn Konkoly
Friday, April 25th 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Join us as PhD candidate Dawn Fariello from Fordham University presents, “Pathogens That Are Hosted By Avian Individuals.” In the fields of human public health and wildlife health, birds occupy an important ecological role as vehicles of disease. Many bird species undergo long range migrations, increasing the distance pathogens may be potentially carried. Several recent scientific studies support that birds carrying Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, introduced the disease to areas historically uninfected. This spread was primarily attributed to birds carrying infected ticks during migration. Understanding the types of pathogens and how their prevalence varies in the avian community will lead to a better understanding of pathogen transmission and bird conservation efforts. To register, contact Rick Wiltraut at 610-746-2801 or rwiltraut@pa.gov.

Northampton County Spring Academy

Northampton County will be sponsoring a Spring Academy, however it will be for ONE evening.  Since there is so much information to share with our citizens, we felt that a Spring Academy could focus on one department in one evening session.   There are limited seats so get the word out about this very interesting session.
The Academy is designed for those Northampton County residents who have always wanted to learn more about how their local government supports the citizens and taxpayers of their county.  It will be held Wednesday, May 7 at the Northampton County Jail, 666 Walnut Street, Easton, PA from 6pm to 8:30pm.
The American Jail Association observes National Correctional Officers and Employees Week the first week of May.  Therefore, the County’s first Spring Academy will focus on the Department of Corrections.
The first 50 county citizens who register will be among the select few to hear about what goes on behind County walls.  By the end of this one-day Spring Session you will be more educated about the Department of Corrections.  This session will cover far more detail than the full Citizens’ Academy which is held in the Fall. The session will focus on the programs and services that Corrections administers.   You won’t want to miss this opportunity to hear about the complex operation of a jail.  Meet those who make it all happen and put your dollars to work.
The goal of the Citizens’ Academy is to foster a better relationship between County Government and its constituents while providing the foundation for greater citizen participation on the county’s

BHS Class of 1986
Scholarship Fund Raiser

It is named in Gary' Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him.
