Local Legislators Reach
Out to County Veterans

NAZARETH – State Reps. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth) and Marcia Hahn (R-Bushkill Township) are reminding Northampton County veterans about outreach services available to them every month.
“According to the Northampton County Department of Veterans Affairs, there are approximately 20,000 veterans living in the county,” Emrick said. “The service we are providing offers them a chance to check out individual programs that may be available to them.”
A representative from the Pennsylvania American Legion is available the first Monday of every month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Emrick’s Nazareth district office, 134 South Main Street. Veterans may meet with that same representative the second Wednesday of every month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Hahn’s district office, 196 West Moorestown Road, Bushkill Township.
“This is a great opportunity for veterans to have specific questions answered on an individual basis,” Hahn added. “We simply ask anyone who is interested in taking advantage of this service to please call ahead and schedule a meeting time.”
Appointments may be set up through Emrick’s office by calling (570) 897-0401 or (610) 746-5090. To schedule an appointment with Hahn’s office, please call (610) 746-2100.

    PEST CONTROL.....

    Don't play cat-and-mouse with rodents

    Picture
(BPT) - Though catching mice has been a popular theme in games and cartoons for decades, preventing rodent invasions is not child’s play. Even the most fastidious homeowners can fall victim to a pest invader at some point.
Research by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reveals that invasive rodents have broken into 29 percent of U.S. homes, bringing with them a slew of health and property hazards. Forty-five percent of those homeowners said the infestation occurred in the fall and winter months.
The two rodent species most commonly found in homes are the house mouse and the Norway rat.
House mice are the most common invasive rodents, with females producing up to a dozen offspring in as little as three weeks. House mice will eat many kinds of food, and they boast excellent climbing and jumping skills. House mice construct nests using paper products and other materials. They also carry several diseases and their urine and feces can trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children.
Norway rats, much like roof rats, are nocturnal and social, burrowing closely to one another. Norway rats are credited with the ability to gnaw through plastic and lead piping to find food and water. These rats are also known to chew through electrical wires, putting homes at risk for fires.
The NPMA offers these tips to help homeowners keep rodents rummaging out in nature - not in the kitchen pantry:
    1. Investigate your home from the outside. As mice can enter through an opening as small as a dime, seal all holes and replace loose mortar and weather stripping. Use steel wool to close gaps.
    2. Store firewood at least 20 feet from your home and at least 5 feet off the ground.
    3. Screen attic vents and openings to chimneys, which could allow unwanted guests into your home.
    4. Landscape with pests in mind by trimming back shrubbery and tree branches, which could provide pathways into the home.
    5. Use proper storage in the kitchen, basements and attics to prevent rodents from having easy access to food and nesting in cupboards and boxes.
For more information about rodents and to find a pest professional in your area, visit www.pestworld.org.

                  • Celebrity on a plate for Pancake Day

        Picture
An artist has made a video showing people how to serve a celebrity on a plate this Pancake Day.
Nathan Shields teamed up with Lyle's Golden Syrup to create pancakes modelled on celebrities including David and Victoria Beckham.
First, he fries the outlines of each celebrity face, and then adds in the detail with a separate pancake mix,
Famous names to get a battering include Kate Middleton, Simon Cowell, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian - and even Grumpy Cat.
Mr Shields, a former maths teacher, began creating pancake portraits to entertain his children, and now runs his own baking company, Saipan Cakes.
Sara Harrison at Lyle's Golden Syrup said: "We want to encourage people to have a bit of fun this Pancake Day, get creative and spread smiles in the kitchen.
"Saipan Cakes is the perfect partner to help us inspire people to do this and the brilliant 'pan-portraits' he has created for us are as delicious as they are beautiful."

The information session will give prospective students the opportunity to meet the instructors, learn about the program and gain information about potential sources of financial assistance for qualified candidates.
This hands-on, non-credit course is taught by instructors with linework experience and has been popular since its inception in 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical or telecommunications industries. During the 12-week course, which includes 375 hours of instruction, students learn to safely and efficiently climb 40’ utility poles, construct assemblies while on poles, use a variety of hand tools, and understand the basics of electricity.
Qualified employees in this field are in demand.  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay of line and telecommunications installers is around $54,000 a year. Employment of telecommunications and equipment installers is expected to grow 15% through 2020.
Graduates of the NCC lineworker program have been hired by PPL, Met Ed, KECO Electric and other companies.  Others have gone into the Northeast Apprenticeship and Training Program, which prepares apprentices for a career in the Outside Electrical industry as journeymen lineworker members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical  Workers.
Classes will begin in March.  The cost is $4,950 and $400 for materials. Students must purchase their own safety belts and climbers.

Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.

Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).
An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, Alive Inside’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
