Continuing education provides competitive edge for job-hunters

Picture
(BPT) - More Americans than ever are going back to school, continuing their education to add skills and credentials to their work portfolio. For many, keeping their expertise current with continuing education gives them the edge in a competitive job market.
Continuing education is not the same as going back to school to complete an unfinished degree, notes Dr. Marianne Greenfield, program chair at Argosy University, Atlanta.
“Continuing education generally refers to any type of post-secondary education for the purpose of keeping current with changes in a particular field of study or for preparation to obtain a certification,” she says. “Some professions require that you earn continuing-education credits in order to maintain a license. The goal of continuing education is to offer adults who already possess a college or university degree further opportunity for learning without having to enroll in a degree program.”
“Now more than ever, it’s important for employees and professionals to keep up with all the latest skills and relevant knowledge necessary to compete in today’s workforce,” says Dr. George Spagnola, chair of the College of Educationat Argosy University, Sarasota. “While a traditional education is necessary in today’s workforce, it is also a cornerstone upon which one can build a better future through continuing education.”
Greenfield agrees.
“As more people obtain academic degrees, candidates whose skills and knowledge are current and relevant in the workplace will have the greater advantage,” she says. “Continuing education is especially important in areas such as human resources, engineering, technology, finance and health care, where rapid advances occur, leading to constantly evolving practices.”
Many professions require candidates to have certifications and licenses to qualify for employment opportunities, so continuing education is important for job-seekers and professionals in those fields.
Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to continue your education.
“Advances in technology have made continuing education more accessible,” says Spagnola. “You can pursue continuing education online, at a physical location or in a combination of both. Technology can help you continue your education and advance your professional knowledge while working and raising a family.”
Given the number of people raising families and working, that flexibility of education can be key to achieving success. Look for an institution or provider that can meet your educational needs while still allowing you to meet your personal and professional obligations.
“Seek out a student-centered institution that meets your needs both academically and non-academically,” says Spagnola.
“Although many course providers cater to those seeking continuing education, it is important to find an accredited institution to ensure your efforts yield results,” says Greenfield. “Look for programs that offer you access to and learning from quality instructors with real-life experience in the specific field of study. Make sure that the program you are considering is compatible with any requirements you will face for licensure.”
And while educational costs are always a concern, many people can find financial assistance in the form of tuition-assistance programs offered through their employers.
“Tuition-assistance programs are of huge benefit to employees and the company,” says Spagnola. “As an employee, you receive financial assistance for your education. Your employer, in turn, gets an employee who is advancing their knowledge and skills and applying them to the organization.”
“The benefits far outweigh the expense and many private sector employers will pay for or reimburse the expense if a compelling case is made for the added competitive advantage for the organization,” agrees Greenfield. “And if your employer isn’t able to assist you with the costs, the Internal Revenue Service allows you to deduct a portion of qualifying continuing-education expenses on your federal tax return. If you pay the expense on behalf of a spouse or a dependent child, you can also claim the deduction.”

            • Seagull 'comes back to life' in cricket match

      Picture
A seagull knocked out by a cricket ball made a miraculous recovery during a match in Melbourne.
The bird was left motionless after being inadvertently struck by a pull shot from batsman Adam Voges in the Big Bash Twenty 20 clash between the Melbourne Stars and Perth Scorchers.
Stars fielder Rob Quiney appeared to signal that the stricken seagull was dead as he carried it delicately over the boundary line.
But minutes later, the feathered friend thrilled the 30,000+ crowd by returning to its feet and even swooped back into the danger zone towards Quiney as he attempted to field a ball.
The bird's brave comeback resulted its own #seagull hashtag on Twitter.
Sarah Gordon, MCG Media and Publicity Adviser, said: "The bird was taken outside into Yarra Park at the change of innings and released into the park when it was clear that the bird's health was okay."

      BANGOR TRAFFIC ALERT

      Messinger Street Bridge (Viaduct)

The  west bound lane of the Messinger Street Bridge (Viaduct) between First Street (Rte 191) and  Murray Street in Bangor has been closed.
After a recent inspection it was determined that the westbound lane of the bridge needs to be closed and detoured due to in-creased deterioration to the bridge.

Eastbound traffic will not be affected.
This restriction will be in effect until construction of the new bridge, estimated to begin in late 2015.
Motorists  will have two detour options:
      1. Drive north on South Main Street to Broadway thence west on Broadway to First Street (Rte 191).
      2. Drive South on South Main Street to Flicksville Road. Turn right and proceed west on Flicksville Road to Route 191.

Pen Argyl Academic Wall of Fame Nominations

It is time for the Pen Argyl High School Alumni Association to select the 2015 Inductees to the Academic Wall of Fame.
This honor is bestowed on a select number of graduates or past district educators each year who have distinguished themselves through community service, academic accomplishments, as well as, advancements in their chosen profession. The creation of this distinction was to set an example of what is possible for all present and future Pen Argyl students!
This honor is different from the PAHS Athletic Hall of Fame where chosen Alumni are honored for their athletic contributions while at Pen Argyl High School.
Anyone can nominate a PAHS graduate for the Academic Wall of Fame honor. Our Academic Wall of Fame Inductees have made a meaningful contribution to the world around them, and the Pen Argyl Alumni Association is proud to bestow this honor. To nominate a graduate, please contact Jim or Heather Hunter at 610-863-9443 or send an e-mail to shorething@rcn.com The deadline for nominations is February 20, 2015.

      Slate Belt Works Together
      to Help Bangor Fire Victims

It may have been almost two weeks since a fire ripped through 26-28 Market Street in Bangor, but community members have not forgotten the fire victims. Brenda O’Bryon, an employee of Merchants Bank, has been working with Jennifer Newland, resident and councilwoman of Roseto, to collect needed items and find housing for the Bangor residents.
Brenda even asked her employer, Merchants Bank, for help. “Brenda has such a good heart and  has been helping the victims get back on their feet. So when she asked the Bank to help too, we immediately did what we could,” said Anthony Biondi, Chief Executive Officer of Merchants Bank.
The bank has opened an account to benefit the fire victims, donated $500.00 to the cause and called upon one of their customers and fellow Slate Belt Residents, Marilyn Rettaliata. She and other members of Ruggiero family will be donating storage space at their B-EB Highway Storage Village. While the community has been generous in donating clothing, furniture and other household goods, until all of the victims find housing, there was no real place to keep the items.
More help is needed. Anyone that would like to donate money to the fire victims, can drop payments at any Merchants Bank branch. Checks can be made payable to The Market Street Fire Fund.  Items that are still needed include: twin beds,  silverware, pots and pans, bake wear, blankets, twin sheets, shower curtain/ rods,  toasters,  crockpots,  hangers, and dressers.
To donate items or to volunteer, please contact Jennifer Newland at 610-217-7088 or Brenda O’Bryon at  570-517-6436.

Keeping with tradition, the Women of Columcille are invited to come celebrate and honor the beloved Brighid, Goddess of Fire and Water. It is also that time of year when life slowly begins to flow and move underneath. It is the return of 'Light', the beginning of Spring also known as Imbolc 'flowing of ewe's milk' when it was all agrarian society. Celebrate and prepare yourselves for the return of 'Light' once again through ceremony, song, ritual and camaraderie of all your Sistars or just take 'me' time, walk the land, meditate and reflect!
In ritual, open yourselves to the loving transmuting energy of the Violet Flame, and then dive deep into the healing Sacred Water... discover how deep your connection to Water is... maybe even learn there is a Mermaid inside you! Be transformed with a powerful Divination Circle. Of course, there is play time for the 'inner child' to create and express herself with our craft time! Later they honor Brighid with a healing Fire ceremony, followed by a deeply bonding bonfire gathering with song, chants, and 'placing of cloths' for Brighid's Blessings. Then off 'steam' from all that fire work with a pulsating drumming circle!
Gift yourself with the richly rewarding and fulfilling retreat experience, whether it be just one day or the whole weekend. It promises to be one of joy, growth, new friends, self-discovery and empowerment - doing 'inner work' has never been so rewarding!

Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.
This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).
An uplifting cinematic exploration of music and the mind, Alive Inside’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
