5. You knew what cappuccino and espresso was before you ever heard of Starbuck's.
6. Your parents  favorite comedian is Pat Cooper
7. Your grandfather had a fig tree
8. You’ve had a cheese steak at the Roseto Hotel
9. When you were growing up, you ate Sunday dinner at 1:00 p.m.
10. Your big family gatherings were held in your garage
11. Your Dad’s favorite singers are (in order) Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jerry Vale, and Louis Prima
12. When you picked up the fresh baked bread at Matt’s you always had to take a piece off the end and eat it as you walked home
13. You had fish on Christmas Eve; before Midnight Mass
14. You’ve been hit with a spoon and/or you’ve been hit by a nun
15. You feel strangely comfortable when you sit on plastic-covered furniture
16. You know all the words to “That’s Amore”
17. You purchased your meat for Sunday gravy from a butcher shop
18. For a short time while you were growing up, you wanted to be a priest or a nun
19. Wouldn't be caught dead using store bought sauce.

Summer Reading Tips
From the Experts

Picture
(NewsUSA) - Summer outdoor play is central to a child's development. Many experts agree that reading, however, is just as important.According to Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D., senior vice president of education outreach for Sylvan Learning, summer is the perfect time for learning and discovery. "It's very important that children continue to practice their academic skills in summer as strong reading skills are incredibly important for all subjects in school. The more children read, the more they'll enjoy reading, and the better readers they're likely to become."
Here are some reading tips from the brain-trust at the National Summer Learning Association and tutoring authority, Sylvan Learning.
* Be a reading role model. By spending time reading at the beach or using the lengthy directions to put the grill together, you show your child that reading is both fun and useful.
* Set aside a consistent time each day for reading. Depending on your family's schedule, reading time might be in the morning, afternoon or before bed. Whatever time you choose, stick to it! Consistency is key to building good habits.
* Let your child make their reading choices. Let kids read whatever they want. Now is a good time to encourage reading about topics they don't study during school to explore new interests, discover new talents or delve into old hobbies.
* Get your child to savor the book she or he is reading. Don't rush through a book -- take time to enjoy it. Have your child stop and think about plot points and characters. This will develop their analytical skills.
* Set goals and reward effort. Reward reading with more reading. Download the next book in your child's favorite series on your tablet or Kindle. Let your child peruse library catalogues online for e-books.
* Read the book, then watch the movie. Few things make kids feel more "superior" than comparing and contrasting a movie to the book it's based on. "That's not the way it was in the book!" Let them explain the differences, guess why a director made those changes and then discuss which version they preferred.
* Go online for ideas. There are lots of websites for kids' book choices. Visit www.BookAdventure.com for reading tips, book suggestions and educational games.

How to find $500 in energy savings in 5 rooms

Picture
BPT) - With the demand for electricity and natural gas rising, right along with energy costs, American homeowners can easily spend hundreds of dollars a month on utility bills.
“From air conditioning larger homes to powering today’s high-tech electronics, we are using more energy than ever and that is certainly hitting many homeowners in their pocketbooks,” says Bobby DiFulgentiz, an energy efficiency expert with Lennox Industries, a leading manufacturer of home heating and cooling equipment. “But there are ways to stretch your dollar further by evaluating how you spend money on energy and making a few simple, smart, energy-efficient home improvements.”
DiFulgentiz explains that there are some practical tips and advice that can help the average homeowner find $500 in energy savings in five different rooms of the house.
How to find $500 in energy savings in 5 rooms(BPT) - With the demand for electricity and natural gas rising, right along with energy costs, American homeowners can easily spend hundreds of dollars a month on utility bills.
* $215 in the living room. Replace your five most frequently used incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs for a savings of $65 each year. These bulbs use less energy and can last up to 10 times longer. In addition, install an ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat, such as the Lennox iComfort Wi-Fi thermostat, which can help control the temperature while you’re away from home or at night when you’re sleeping. When used properly, these thermostats can save as much as $150 per year in energy costs.
* $145 in the bathroom. Replace your existing shower head with a new 2.5-gallon-per-minute (low-flow) shower head. The new water efficient shower head coupled with a 10-minute shower will save five gallons of water over a typical bath and up to $145 each year on electricity used to heat the water.
* $74 in the laundry room. To save hot water, and the $24 to $40 in fuel that it takes to heat that water each year, wash your clothes in cold water. Be sure to choose a laundry detergent that is formulated for use in cold temperatures. Save another $34 each year by cleaning the lint trap in your clothes dryer before every load of laundry, which will help increase the drying efficiency of the machine.
* $36 in the basement or utility room. Lower the temperature on your hot water heater from 145 degrees to 120 degrees – the only place you’ll notice the difference is on your utility bill. In fact, this slight reduction in temperature can save the average homeowner between $36 and $61 each year.
* $35 in the kitchen. To keep your hard-earned money from literally going down the drain, be sure to repair faucet leaks at the kitchen sink. Hot water leaking at a rate of one drip per second can waste up to 1,661 gallons of water annually and up to $35 in electricity or natural gas.
Total savings: $505 (or more in some cases)
In addition, since heating and cooling accounts for nearly 50 percent of the average home’s utility bill – or up to 50 cents of every dollar – and is typically the largest energy expense – it’s important to be sure to schedule annual routine maintenance on your heating and cooling system to ensure it’s running as efficiently as possible.
If the air conditioning system is more than 10 years old or the furnace is more than 15 years old – the average life spans of cooling and heating units – consider replacing them with a new, ENERGY STAR-qualified system that will be more energy efficient and can help lower utility bills. For example, by replacing an old 10 SEER (seasonal energy efficiency rating) cooling system with a 26 SEER system, which is more than twice as efficient, homeowners can save more than $2,700 over a five-year period.
For more information about how to stretch your energy dollar further, visit www.lennox.com.

Ask The Doc........

Are you sure E-cigs
are really safe?

Picture
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
The latest “smoking” rage seems to be the Electronic cigarette, or E-cigs. In an attempt to make the smoking habit less offensive to the public, and theoretical healthier for the “smoker” (there actually is no smoke involved); we are now seeing e-cigs.
Many public areas that do not allow tobacco smoking are okay with the use of E-cigs. There is actually no smoke produced, only “water” vapor. No cigarette smell exist, and therefore an E-cig user can enjoy the habit without offending others. At least, in theory.
So why do you think one would continue to spend money on this habit? Nicotine.
Nicotine is a drug found in some plants, that affects mammals by acting as a stimulant. It constricts all blood vessels, including coronary arteries, raises blood pressure, speeds up metabolism, and has somewhat of a stimulating neurological effect. In simple words, it gives us a “rush”.
As we learn to enjoy that rush, we “need” to continue nicotine consumption if we want to continue the rush. That’s called addiction.
So E-cigs have removed tobacco from the smoking habit, but kept the smoker addicted to nicotine. The potential problem is that we are not sure of the safety of inhaling vaporized nicotine, and Poison Control Centers are reporting significant increases in calls about liquid nicotine toxicity. The amount in a small vial could easily cause death in small children.
So have we arrived at a safer place? The jury may be out, but folks I bet when this one is over, we say-“oops! E-cigs are not a good idea.” Call your health professional about smoking cessation. It’s achievable and healthy. garywilliamsdmd.com.
