The Colonial Hotel in Bangor (circa 1910) is now the home of the Broadway Pub.

When Slate Was King The Colonial Was The Place To Be

When Slate was king in Bangor and the economy at its peak, the Colonial Hotel was a mecca for the V.I.P’s of that era.
Built in the fall of 1905, at a cost of $50,000 (1.35 million dollars in today’s money) the Colonial had 150 rooms, a great bar and a popular restaurant.
“That was the place to go for businessmen right there,” said Slate Belt Historian Donald Jones. “It was fancy and we brought people in for food, but as I recall we also got a lot of free martinis.’
The builder and first owner of the Colonial was George Rodenbaugh. He thought that, what is now known as the corner of First Street and Broadway, would be an ideal location for a truly upscale hotel.  Problem was - a private residence already occupied the land.
Rodenbaugh decided that he would “simply” move the house down the street, but a dirt road and trees made that a problem.  He could have cut down the trees, but he didn’t want to do that, even though he did so at a later date.
What did he do? He cut the house in half and moved each half down first street next to the present location of Bangor Hardware and put the two halves back together .... or he tried to ....
Jones, by coincidence eventually lived in that house.
“The floors were not very level,” he said with a laugh. “If you put a marble on the floor it would roll from one side to the next.”
Back at the hotel with level floors and a thriving business, the hotel was a popular venue for many local functions..
During one Welsh Day in the 1930s, Welsh Day officials wanted to make the event even more special. They always invited celebrities from abroad to attract more patrons. But one year, (circa 1937)  they brought British Heavyweight Boxing champion Tommy Farr to Bangor and gave him lodging in an exquisite room at the Colonial. As word spread, everyone wanted to come to the Colonial to meet Farr. To control the crowds, the Bangor Police assigned Joe Grigg and a Mr. Harding to watch the doors of the Colonial, but Jones still really wanted to meet Farr.
“Don’t you know my dad grew up with Joe Grigg,” Jones chuckled. “So Joe told my dad to take me up the back steps so I could see him.”
Since those days the hotel has been a pool hall, had a watch repairman, taxi service, Western Union and more. Today, it is the home of the Broadway Pub which recently hosted Jones and a group celebrating Bangor’s 140th year of incorporation.

    BUSINESS.....

Accountants solving crimes and help businesses plan

    Picture
(BPT) - Accounting jobs are expected to grow 13 percent between 2012 and 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with select specializations projected to grow even faster.
Emerging jobs in the accounting field call for new and diverse skill sets that have not been required in the past. Today’s accountants help companies make important business decisions that impact their bottom line, imparttechnologically driven insight and even solve white-collar crimes. In fact, each of these assignments represents a hot, new professional specialization in the accounting field.
Forensic accounting, financial analysis and business systems analysis have emerged as exciting opportunities for job-seekers.
    Forensic accounting
Forensic accountants combine traditional accounting with investigative skills to help companies sniff out fraud and white-collar crime. Past high-profile fraud cases involving Bernie Madoff and Enron prompted stricter regulations and public calls for greater transparency. Large companies now routinely employ forensic accountants to protect them from similar activities. Nearly 40 percent of the top 100 accounting firms in the United States now have a forensic accounting department and the field is expected to be one of the top 20 job markets in the next few years.
    Financial analysis
Accountants who can analyze financial information and identify key trends are in high demand. These financial analysts weigh company risks and rewards by assessing the current state of the business, how the market is expected to perform and how the business will be impacted by a potential deal. Companies rely on this type of accountant to interpret financial data and turn it into insights that can be used to make investments and offer background informationaround mergers and acquisitions. Employment of financial analysts is expected to grow 16 percent between 2012 and 2022, faster than the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
    Business systems analysis
Many companies are looking for accountants who understand information technology (IT). Called business systems analysts (or sometimes computer systems analysts), these professionals use their knowledge of IT to determine the best way to implement and upgrade the use of technology to maximize business performance and profit. As cloud computing, cybersecurity and mobile networks are further integrated into everyday business, demand for business systems analysts will continue to increase. The field is expected to grow 25 percent between 2012 and 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Students interested in pursuing these career opportunities in accounting will first need a bachelor’s degree in the field. Graduates can enhance their career potential by earning a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation to demonstrate their high level technical skills, advanced knowledge and high ethical standards. A student can earn a CPA designation through 150 semester hours (typically 30 more than a bachelor’s degree), passing the CPA exam and then applying for licensure. Eligibility requirements for the exam vary by state.
Many schools now offer degree programs that address the growing demand for these “new” accountants. DeVry University, for example, offers a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and accounting specializations within its bachelor's degree programs in business administration, management and technical management.
Upon completing their degree, students can begin training in the field for a specialized accounting career. Some companies offer applicants a self-selection test to help them determine the right specialization for their qualifications and interests. In general, finding the right specialization comes down to personal preference. Financial analysts require a more in-depth understanding of business markets, business systems analysts need a solid IT background, and forensic accountants require knowledge in law enforcement and criminal justice.
“The days are long gone when all accountants did was manage financial statements and taxes,” said Beth Rolison, accounting professor at DeVry University. “Today’s complex business environment requires accountants to be the eyes and ears of a company and demands that they possess a variety of soft and hard skills to live up to the role of trusted advisor.”
Trending specializations open the door for students with diverse backgrounds and interests to enter the field. Demand for accountants will continue to rise as they play an increasingly important role in helping businesses navigate the financial landscape in our dynamic marketplace.

    Twitter Campaign Mocks Hipster Restaurants

    Picture
A Twitter campaign launched to ridicule trendy restaurants which serve food on wooden boards and tiles has gone viral.
Sports journalist Ross McGinnes has attracted thousands of followers since launching his We Want Plates account just a week ago.
He was inspired to set up the account after seeing his friend share a picture of a steak on a wooden board with the comment: "That is a big meal!"
"It wasn't a big meal. He'd fallen for the nonsense, said Mr McGinnes, 40, of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.
"Chopping boards, drinks in jam jars and chips in tin buckets have been a bug-bear of mine for years, but looking through Twitter I couldn't find an account which focused on them.
"We Want Plates was born, and has opened Pandora's Box of awful, pretentious food presentation."
Dozens of photographs of restaurants serving dishes in slippers, trowels and even a miniature shopping trolley have since been shared using the hashtag #WeWantPlates.
Simon Ricketts wrote: "I had hummus served in a miniature wheelbarrow a few months ago. Where does it end?"
And Braden James tweeted: "I refuse to bring children into this world whilst it is still commonplace to service chips in a tin cup. Cups are NOT for chips."

    Cutting Edge Dentistry

    Picture
    by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
    garywilliamsdmd.com
To use the words of one of my supply Reps., digital intra-oral scanners are, ”scary accurate.” But, I had no idea how true that is.
Family Dental Care has just begun using a digital scanner for imaging crowns, veneers, bridges, splints, and Invisalign cases. That means, taking a PICTURE of the mouth, instead of making an impression of the mouth. An intra-oral scan takes the place of goopy impression material, which is nice; but, the best news is that the accuracy is unmatched!
The fit of your new crowns and veneers is very precise. And all without a tray full of impression material. At Family Dental Care, we have always promised to stay abreast of tried and true technology, and this jump to digital scanning, is definitely cutting edge. garywilliamsdmd.com.
