Helpful Changes Made
For Using This Website

We have made some changes to our website that we believe will make our site more user friendly.
1. We have taken everything from Local 1 and moved it to the bottom of this page (home page). We have titled the new section “Future Events.” Here you will see local and area events that will occur soon. A date is listed for each.  These stories have already appeared at the top of the home page and will appear there again one day before, or on the day of the event. To reach our new section continue to scroll down until you find the Future Events header.
2. The home page now has three sections: The first two are current and the third is future events. When you go to the home page continue to scroll down.
3. The local, state, and national news which appeared at the bottom of the home page is now on a page by itself.  Look at the very top of each page and find “LV-National.” Click on that and you will go to that page.

Dedicated keepers at Paignton Zoo are caring for a rare baby that weighed little more than a CD at birth. The pygmy slow loris was one of twins born to a first-time mother which abandoned it after the other didn't survive. For the first night, head mammal keeper Craig Gilchrist slept in an office in the Zoo, feeding the tiny baby using a 1ml syringe and a small rubber teat. Seven keepers now take it in turns to feed it day and night.

 Green spring cleaning ideas that
are kind to Mother Nature

Picture
It's not necessary to use harsh chemicals and toxins to achieve a cleaner, fresh-smelling home this spring. Homemade cleaning products and earth-friendly tactics can help you clean green. Here are green cleaning ideas and a supplies list that will make Mother Nature happy:
* Begin by decluttering, which requires no chemicals at all. As you're disposing of items you no longer need or want, be mindful of ways to keep them out of the waste stream. Donating gently used but no-longer-needed items such as clothing, furniture and books is a great way to reduce waste and cut clutter at the same time.
* Clean windows instantly brighten your house inside and out, and they're one of the easiest household cleaning chores to do with natural tools. A simple solution of white vinegar and water (about two tablespoons of vinegar per gallon of water) makes an effective, low-cost and green window cleaner. Spritz on windows using a spray bottle and use newspaper instead of paper towels for a streak-free clean. Don't like the smell of vinegar? Straight lemon juice works just as well and smells distinctly like spring.
* Pull out the white vinegar again to mix up a great floor cleaner that works well on surfaces from hardwood to vinyl to tile. You'll need to add three or four cups of vinegar to about a gallon of hot water. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil - peppermint or lemon are popular choices - so that when the vinegar aroma evaporates, the wonderful scent of the oil will linger.
* Laundering linens is a cornerstone of spring cleaning. Mass marketed liquids and dryer sheets, however, rely on softening chemicals and petroleum-derived fragrances to impart softness and scent. Try this simple, natural fabric softening recipe from the essential oil experts at Aura Cacia:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup vinegar
2 tablespoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon lavender essential oil
Directions: Dissolve baking soda in vinegar, stir in lavender and pour into the water during your washer's rinse cycle. Line dry clothes for maximum green value. Or, if you must use a dryer, add a wool dryer ball to shorten drying time and soften clothes. To boost the fresh scent of lavender, sprinkle several drops on the dryer ball or on a paper towel and add to the dryer during the cool down cycle.
* Prepare a multi-purpose cleaner to help brighten and freshen surfaces throughout your home. Mix two tablespoons of unscented liquid soap with four drops of lemon essential oil and two drops of tea tree essential oil. Pour the mixture into a gallon of warm water. Use this multi-purpose solution with a sponge mop or rag to remove dirt from floors and hard surfaces such as countertops and appliances.
* Stock up on natural cleaning supplies such as lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils, baking and washing soda, Borax, white distilled vinegar, spray and squeeze bottles, natural bristle scrubbing brushes, old newspaper, cotton dusting cloths and hemp or jute fiber scrubbing cloths.
Instead of chemical air fresheners that can irritate allergy sufferers, make your own room fresheners using cotton balls soaked in essential oil. Store in decorative ceramic dishes out of reach of children and pets. For bedrooms, lavender is relaxing. Lemon and other citrus oils are invigorating for bathrooms, and cinnamon and clove impart mouth-watering aroma to kitchens.

  Royal Faberge egg worth
$33 million found at market

Picture
It is something all antique enthusiasts dream about - unearthing a rare gem at a market that turns out to be worth millions.
And for a man in the United States the dream came true when a golden egg he bought from a bric-a-brac stall in the Midwest so he could sell it for scrap turned out to be a Faberge egg worth about  $33million.
The scrap metal dealer, who has not been named, paid just $13,000 for the treasure.
He planned to sell it for scrap value, but the egg was saved from destruction when nobody would match his initial outlay.
The egg, which has a Vacheron Constantin watch inside it, was given by Alexander III to his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna, in Easter 1887.
But it became a financial burden to its new owner and one evening he despairingly tapped "egg" and "Vacheron Constantin" into Google.
So began the process of establishing that it was a Third Imperial Faberge Easter Egg made for Russian royalty.
The internet search led the scrap dealer to an article which quoted Kieran McCarthy, director of Wartski, the London-based Royal Warrant-holding experts on Carl Faberge's work.
When the man then flew to London to show Mr McCarthy pictures of his purchase, the Faberge expert was speechless.
Mr McCarthy flew to the small Midwest town to confirm the egg was genuine, finding it sitting on a kitchen table beside some cupcakes.
"It's the most incredible discovery," Mr McCarthy said.
"We have so many discoveries but none of them are as momentous as this.
"It has traveled from Imperial St Petersburg to the rust belt of America. It's a story that deserves to be told because it could so easily have slipped away.
"For the Faberge community and the historical community, it is a wondrous event because the Easter egg is the ultimate target for every antique dealer and every enthusiast.
"It may never be seen again and it may disappear into the deepest, darkest vaults of a collector somewhere."
Wartski bought the egg for a private collector and it will be on display for four days in London from April 14.
The egg was last seen in public in March 1902 at an exhibition in St Petersburg, and the worldwide race to track it down has now been won by a humble scrap metal dealer.

April Activities at Jacobsburg

Tumblin’ Timberdoodles!
Saturday, April 5th 6:30-8:00 p.m
.
A member of the shorebird family, the American Woodcock uses its long bill to probe the mud for earthworms in wetlands, moist woods, and old fields. Unfortunately, human development has encroached on the last remaining woodcock habitat in the Lehigh Valley and Jacobsburg is one of their last strongholds. Join us for this special evening to observe male woodcocks displaying. Learn about American Woodcock biology and how Jacobsburg is managing habitat for woodcocks. Participants should dress for the weather and bring binoculars. To register, contact Rick Wiltraut at 610-746-2801 or rwiltraut@pa.gov.
Tuesday Trails
April 8th & 22nd 5:30-7:00 p.m.

To register, contact Lauren Forster at 610-746-2801 or laforster@pa.gov.
Speaker Series: Dawn Konkoly
Friday, April 25th 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Join us as PhD candidate Dawn Fariello from Fordham University presents, “Pathogens That Are Hosted By Avian Individuals.” In the fields of human public health and wildlife health, birds occupy an important ecological role as vehicles of disease. Many bird species undergo long range migrations, increasing the distance pathogens may be potentially carried. Several recent scientific studies support that birds carrying Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, introduced the disease to areas historically uninfected. This spread was primarily attributed to birds carrying infected ticks during migration. Understanding the types of pathogens and how their prevalence varies in the avian community will lead to a better understanding of pathogen transmission and bird conservation efforts. To register, contact Rick Wiltraut at 610-746-2801 or rwiltraut@pa.gov.
Earth Day at Jacobsburg
Saturday, April 26th 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

    Heritage Center Opening 2014
Season with Map and New Exhibit

The Slate Belt Heritage Center will open its 2014 season on April 6 with a road rally and exhibit to kick-off the new Heritage Tour Map of the Slate Belt.  The road rally begins at 9 am when car teams start their drive to Slate Belt sites and find answers to road rally questions.  A reception for Rally participants and Heritage Center members follows at 2 pm and opens the new exhibit, “Sightsee and Savor: A Heritage Tour of the Slate Belt.’
The Heritage Tour Map was two years in the making and features 59 historic, recreational, and scenic sites in all nine Slate Belt municipalities. “The Rails to Trails project inspired us, and we saw a need for a regional map that draws people from urban centers to the Slate Belt,” says Melissa Hough, president of the Center.  “There hasn’t been a local map since 2005 and an update was long overdue.”
The new exhibit shows the creative process behind the map and expands the Slate Belt story through pictures and artifacts.  “It’s like a walking tour inside the Center.  Some of the artifacts describe people, places, and things that are shown on the map.”
Road rally participants and Heritage Center members will receive the first copies of the map. Marc Blau coordinated the project, former Slate Belt native Dave Blau designed and drew the map, and photographer Jeff Jancovic took the pictures. The map was funded in part by the Northampton County Department of Economic and Community Development, Merchants Bank, and a number of municipalities and businesses.
Proceeds from the rally benefit the Heritage Center and help to preserve and promote Slate Belt Heritage.  The Center is located at 30 North First Street, Bangor, PA. Beginning April 12, the Center will be open Saturdays and Sundays, 12-3, and by appointment.
