Helen Petyrak, ABCDT, APDT, TD who is associated with VCA-AVH Animal Hospital in Pen Argyl will be supplying columns to the Slate Belt Town Topics in the Ask the Trainer column.

Ask the Trainer column coming
 by Helen Petyral to Sbtt

Helen Petyerak is Professional Dog trainer, focusing on the interactions between canines and humans
She studied with the Animal Behavior College where she received her certification as a dog trainer. She is a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and Therapy Dog Inc.
Committed to providing solutions to her clients needs, Helen actively pursues continuing education by attending seminars yearly, keeping current with industry literature, actively participating in hands on workshops, and using her own dogs to understand and study interactions between other dogs and humans.
Petyrak has her own training business, Team of Two Canine Training, and teaches group classes at VCA AVH Animal Hospital along with an “Ask the Trainer” column, where she not only answers questions, but shares her knowledge hoping she will make a difference in the life of a canine family.
Today, the most modern training theories used suggests that reinforcing good behavior with rewards and praise is much more successful than the outdated training methods once used, such as verbal abuse, physical punishment, leash yanking, and shock collars. This type of forceful handling left many dogs psychologically damaged and insecure. Some even became aggressive toward their owners.
Positive reinforcement (i.e., giving the dog a reward in the form of praise, play, toy, food, when it responds to a behavior you ask for or like) has shown to be the most effective way to train a dog because it increases the likelihood of that behavior being repeated. Thus, a relationship is built on trust and respect rather than intimidation and fear.
Through simple, easy to learn techniques, Helen teaches dog/human interaction. Learned behaviors need to be unlearned and relearned. Specific unwanted behaviors are replaced with acceptable behaviors.  A dog that is given constant guidance grows up to be a confident dog. A confident dog is a well balanced dog. Family members that work together enforcing rules and boundaries together, create a happy home. A happy home creates a happy dog. A happy dog creates a happy family.
You can start communicating with your dog in ways you never thought possible and reap the rewards of a true family companion.

 Emrick Package of Bridge
Commission Bills goes to State Senate

HARRISBURG – Three bills authored by state Rep. Joe Emrick (R-Northampton) that would bring more accountability to operations of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission passed the state House unanimously on Tuesday. House Bills 619, 620 and 621 may now be taken up by the state Senate.
“This legislation is long overdue, “Emrick said. “Because the bridge commission is a bi-state compact, our neighbors in New Jersey are waiting for us to pass companion legislation.”
House Bill 620 places the auditing process solely in the hands of the auditor general of Pennsylvania and the state auditor of New Jersey.
“House Bill 620 calls for an annual financial and management audit of expenditures and operations of the commission, as opposed to a biennial performance audit,” added Emrick. “An independent audit will provide a more open and transparent report card on the commission’s actions.”
House Bill 619 empowers Pennsylvania’s governor with a 10-day window to invoke veto power over any decision made by the commission, an example of which is the 2011 toll increase. House Bill 621 does the same with regard to actions of any individual commissioner.
“New Jersey is waiting on us to pass these bills so we can begin the process of more closely scrutinizing the commission’s operations,” Emrick commented. “This group has had virtual free reign over the years to make decisions that have had detrimental effects on commuters, taxpayers and the business community. I hope the state Senate acts quickly to send these bills to Gov. Tom Corbett’s desk for his signature into law.”
Questions about this or any legislate topic should be directed to Emrick’s Mt. Bethel office at (570) 897-0401 or his Nazareth office at (610) 746-5090.

EDUCATION........

 Create a safer environment
for summer swimming fun

Picture
Swimming is a popular summer activity and if you have a pool or spa, your backyard just may be this summer's most popular retreat for friends, neighbors and all of the children that come with them. Adding as many water safety steps as possible is the best way to assure a safer and fun experience this summer.
Drowning accidents tend to happen very, very quickly. The CDC reports that in most cases, the children involved were out of their parents' sight for less than five minutes. The good news: drowning can be prevented. Barriers help buy those few minutes needed to re-establish direct contact when it has been briefly lost. It's vital to have layers of protection in place between your home and pool to buy the time to re-establish contact after a momentary distraction, such as answering the phone or door, texting, or other routine activities.
Numerous studies have shown that an isolation fence that separates the home from the pool can help prevent 50 to 90 percent of all toddler drownings. Only an isolation fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate in proper working order will prevent children from getting into the water without your knowledge. For above-ground pools, a fence and gate surrounding the steps or ladder can prevent toddler access.
"D&D's MagnaLatch is the number-one selling child and pool safety gate latch in the world," says D&D Technologies' Jim Paterson, senior vice president of sales and marketing. "Created for swimming pool gates, MagnaLatch is designed to extend above the height of the fence to keep the release knob out of reach of children. With its patented magnetic latching, it won't jam, is self-latching and vertically and horizontally adjustable." Millions have been installed to help keep children safe around residential pools, public pools, and wherever safety fencing is needed.
Pool gates should be inspected frequently and adjusted for latch alignment and hinge tension; to make sure they self-close and self-latch every time. With D&D's TruClose hinges, the homeowner can easily adjust the self-closing tension after installation with a screwdriver.
Parents can get their children involved in pool safety education and help them become a Safer Kid, through the Safer 3 program developed by the Safer3 Water Safety Foundation. The Safer 3 is a comprehensive initiative to dramatically reduce drowning incidences and create safer water -- including fencing and other safety devices such as alarms around the pool; Safer Kids, including adult supervision and swim skill attainment; and Safer Response -- meaning adults should know CPR and rescue breathing. Parents can promote water safety with their children by downloading free coloring books, story books and activity sheets for their children at http://www.swimforlife.org.
Here are some additional tips to stay pool safe this summer:
* Never leave children alone in or near the pool or spa, even for a moment.
* If a child is missing, look for them first in the pool or spa.
* Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to avoid entrapments.
* The National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) recommends that a "water watcher" be designated for safety when children are in the pool, to maintain eye-to-eye contact at all times.
* Toys or floating chlorine dispensers that look like toys should never be left in the pool area.
* Be aware of anything a child could use to climb up on and over a pool fence.
* Keep rescue equipment, like a shepherds hook, near the pool.
* If your child is invited to a friend's pool don't expect the other parent to be as cautious as you may be. Offer to go with them to be another set of eyes on the pool.
* Brush up on your own swimming skills. You never know when you may have to rescue someone who is drowning, so make sure you know the proper way to help without harming yourself.
* Learn CPR. You can be the one to administer CPR to someone in need while waiting on an ambulance to arrive. You can sign up for CPR classes at The Red Cross or your local YMCA. It's a lifesaving skill you'll be glad to have.
"With isolation fencing and the Safer 3 in place, your family can look forward to years of safer relaxation and enjoyment of your pool," Paterson says.
For safety gate products visit www.ddtechglobal.com and to learn more about pool safety visit www.ndpa.org.  Gate hardware by D&D Technologies is available through fencing contractors and many hardware retail stores, including Lowe's and Home Depot.

Virtual reality simulator lets you fly like a bird

Picture
Swiss scientists have created a flight simulator which they say recreates the experience of flying like a bird. The team behind the innovative Birdly project claims it embeds the participant "in a virtual landscape where his body is the body of a Red Kite".
The wearer is fitted with an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and strapped to a human flapping interaction platform.
The movements of the structure are designed to to mimic the flight model of the bird, while a literal bird's eye view is screened through the headset.
The experience is heightened for the wearer with sound, smell and wind effects.
A pine scent is unleashed while flying over forests while 'more earthy' smells are experiences over farms. The wind is created by a fan.

The First 25

Picture
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
So, you finish your career training, ready to go to work, and someone says to you, “enjoy yourself, ‘cause the time is going to fly.” And you think to yourself, “yeah, right!” And then it happens. Suddenly one day I find myself writing an article about practicing dentistry in my home town for 25 years…and counting. I can’t believe it.
Family Dental Care began in a renovated apartment, here on South Robinson Ave., in Pen Argyl, in 1989. When the door opened that first morning, there were a grand total of zero patients of record. And I have been blessed ever since.
We have cared for your families over the years and catered a lot to your children. Now, not that I’m aging or anything; but now I treat your grandchildren…and more. Where did the time go?
We still love seeing your children after 25 years. That’s why we offer free dental exams to all kids under the age of 3 years. We’ve learned some of what makes for good oral health, and we still love to care for the little ones, and watch them grow up in our practice. Yes, time flies when you are having fun, and so far, it’s been a hoot! Stay tuned for announcements about our special “Sealant Day”.
Thank you Slate Belt residents and kids. Looking forward to the next 25!

BHS Class of 1986
Scholarship Available

A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary' Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. We have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize our other friends and classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.
Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School..
