Veterans License Plate Available

New license plates, designed to recognize veterans and provide funds to preserve monuments in the Gettysburg National Military Park are now available from PennDOT.
The new series of military-themed plates, authorized by Act 109 of 2014, recognizes the sacrifices of our service members and veterans for their preparation for and service in combat. Specialty plates depicting the Combat Action Ribbon, the Combat Action Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the CombatAction Badge and the Combat Medical Badge are now available for qualifying service members and veterans.
The legislation also expanded the criteria for service to qualify for the Merchant Marine registration plate from World War II veterans only to include Merchant Marines who have served during the Korean War, the Vietnam War or any of the recent wars in the Middle East.  PennDOT currently offers 34 different types of registration plates recognizing our veterans.
Also, PennDOT is now issuing the Pennsylvania Monuments special fund registration plate that will generate funds to assist with preserving monuments at the Gettysburg National Military Park. The plate has an image of the Pennsylvania Memorial Monument at Gettysburg with the words "Gettysburg 1863" displayed at the bottom of the plate. The fee for the plate is $54 with $23 of the proceeds to be used to provide grants to nonprofit organizations for cleaning, repairing and restoring monuments in the Gettysburg National Military Park.
More about registration plate programs and availability of a wide variety of registration plates can be found by visiting their website at www.dmv.state.pa.us, clicking on the Motor Vehicle Information Center and looking under Registration Plate Information.

Uncontrollable laughing and crying:
A stroke survivor's unexpected diagnosis

Picture
(BPT) - At the age of 33, Delanie Wilson had everything she’d ever hoped for. She married the love of her life, had two wonderful children and adored her job as a history teacher.
She had recently lost 78 pounds and was in the best shape of her life. In Delanie’s eyes, life couldn’t be better. That was until June 2012, when Delanie fell victim to a stroke, which left doctors questioning whether Delanie would ever be able to talk or walk again.
“Because I was so young, I thought I was invincible to something like a stroke,” said Delanie. “I was in great physical condition and when I suffered the stroke, my world was turned upside down.”
Delanie’s road to recovery was challenging and involved months of rehab. With time, Delanie saw improvements in her speech and movement, but began experiencing uncontrollable bouts of crying and laughing. A psychologist in the hospital told Delanie that it was probably just depression and was treated accordingly. These episodes became more intense and disruptive for Delanie once she returned home.
“When I returned home from rehab after being in such a controlled environment, my emotions unraveled,” said Delanie. “Any time I was stressed or overwhelmed, I would break out into fits of laughter that I couldn’t control or stop. I started to question whether this was really depression.”
Delanie lived with these unprompted outbursts for six months. During this time, her family and friends were embarrassed to be with her in public. Delanie stopped going to church and didn’t attend a friend's grandmother's funeral in fear she would break out into laughter.
“I missed a lot of social situations and isolated myself at home because I was afraid of what I might do,” said Delanie. “I knew something wasn’t right so I went to my neurologist and he diagnosed me with PseudoBulbar Affect (PBA). I couldn’t believe it; it was such a relief knowing that this was a real condition with a name.”
PBA is a neurologic condition characterized by uncontrollable, sudden outbursts of laughing and/or crying that don’t match what a person is feeling on the inside. PBA can occur in people with brain injuries or certain neurologic conditions such as stroke or Alzheimer’s. In a recent study, approximately 38 percent of stroke patients exhibited symptoms of PBA.
There is not always a clear trigger for a PBA episode, which can last from seconds to minutes and occur several times a day.  Sometimes these crying or laughing episodes are so exaggerated and disruptive they may interfere with routine activities or cause people with PBA to avoid social situations altogether.
Nearly two million Americans with certain neurologic conditions or brain injuries are estimated to suffer from PBA, yet there is a lack of awareness and knowledge of the condition. PBA is often mistaken as depression or just a part of the person’s primary underlying condition—when in fact, it’s a separate, treatable condition.
“There is a need for increased PBA awareness in the stroke community,” said Delanie. “I was able to work with my doctor to find a treatment that works for me and I’ve been able to get my life back in order, but I am still adjusting to this condition. I encourage anyone with similar symptoms to speak to their doctor about PBA.”
How to differentiate PBA from depression:
* Depression: Ongoing and continuous state of sadness or hopelessness that can last over weeks or months
* PBA: In patients with certain underlying neurologic conditions or brain injuries PBA episodes are brief, spontaneous eruptions of crying and/or laughing that may not truly reflect what a person is feeling inside.
Visit PBAinfo.org for more information on PBA, how it is different from depression, and to take PBA self-assessment test and follow @PBAinfo on Twitter.

            • Boy missing for six days found in IKEA

        Picture
A 12-year-old boy who ran away after being told off by his mother was found by police six days later in IKEA.Peng Yijian is said to have survived on free samples handed out by supermarkets while he was 'on the run' in Shanghai.
When police discovered him he was weak with hunger and had to be placed on an intravenous drip in hospital.
His mother Liu said her son had run away before, but never for so long.
Yijian was reported missing last Tuesday and officers spotted him on CCTV wandering around Shanghai South Railway Station.
The next day's footage showed him at a nearby Carrefour outlet.
"We thought there might be other places he likes to visit, so we asked his mother. She gave us eight or nine names, including Caoxi Park, Nanfang Shopping Mall, In Center and IKEA," said Sun Miao, a police officer in Xuhui District.
Officers were dispatched and the boy was spotted by a surveillance camera at the IKEA outlet on Caoxi Road.
After a 40-minute hunt, during which exit doors were blocked, police found Yijian near an escalator on the ground floor.

        Tomorrow's Leaders

        Picture
        by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
        garywilliamsdmd.com
Well, it’s that time again! In most North American homes, the count-down is on for the beginning of a new school year.
It always gets me thinking about the great sampling of people we see in our dental office. From newborns to 90-somethings.
Last week someone asked me the question, “looking in the mouths of many 40 and 50 year-olds, what could have been different if health was addressed when they were, say…15 years old? The answer is a resounding, a lot!
We realize that we do have the opportunity and know-how to change the health future for today’s school kids.
In the year 2014 we have the advantage of all the research, learning, and yes, mistakes that have been made by humans, to learn from. And what does that information say?
Step in early (school age), and maximize every variable for success. Dentistry knows how to achieve a successful long-term outcome. Once dentistry, parents and children comply; we can change the future of your family’s overall health, for the better. Call a Dental Professional today, and change your future.

        Battery Recycling Program

Pen Argyl is pleased to announce that they are participating in a battery recycling program.   Madison Young, a freshman at Pen Argyl, decided to implement a battery recycling program in her community as her Girl Scout Silver Award Project.
Madison has provided them with a battery recycling container.  They will be accepting dry cell batteries:  AA, AAA, C, D & 9 volt batteries.  For safety purposes, please put a piece of masking tape over the end of each battery.
Batteries are not garbage!  In addition to the household batteries being recycled through Madison’s project, your are encouraged to participate in Northampton County’s Semi-Annual Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Events.
Programs like this help make our community a better, safer place, and we encourage everyone to participate in this program for our community.
