1950 Truman Announces Development of H-Bomb

Picture
U.S. President Harry S. Truman publicly announces his decision to support the development of the hydrogen bomb, a weapon theorized to be hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II.

On November 1, 1952, the United States successfully detonated “Mike,” the world’s first hydrogen bomb, on the Elugelab Atoll in the Pacific Marshall Islands. The 10.4-megaton thermonuclear device, built upon the Teller-Ulam principles of staged radiation implosion, instantly vaporized an entire island and left behind a crater more than a mile wide.

Kansas High School Student Coverts
 Locker into Vending Machine

Picture

(UPI) -- A Kansas high school student's use of spare locker space is going viral thanks to a video showing his finished project -- a fully functioning vending machine.   Blake Hawkins, 17, a senior at Valley Center High School, posted a video to YouTube showing his chemistry teacher demonstrating the soft drink vending machine the student built in his school locker.
Hawkins, who detailed the process behind the invention on the website Instructables, said "The Soda Locker" was inspired by the extra space in his school locker.
"With so many schools moving to electronic devices for books, lockers become less of a space for your books, and more of a question of: 'What am I going to do with this?'" he wrote.
Hawkins said his invention proved popular with his fellow students, selling up to six 75-cent cans of soda during each class break.
"I think most of it is the novelty that you're buying a pop from a vending machine inside of a locker," he told KWCH-TV.
He said school administrators made him shut down The Soda Locker because it violates school rules, but he is working on reaching a deal to operate the vending machine with proceeds going to a school club or program.

Technology...

Tech Goals to Save Money
and Make Life Easier

Picture

(StatePoint) These days, the average consumer needs to budget for a variety of tech-related expenses -- from data plans to cable bills. These monthly expenses quickly add up.
Here are a few smart strategies for saving money on these budget line items, as well as tips for avoiding common pain points and consumer grievances.
   • Know what you’re paying for. Many tech-related monthly bills contain hidden fees and fine print.
“Your mobile bills are some of the most complex. From paying for bits and bytes to hidden fees, the advertised low monthly payment never seems to materialize on your statement,” says Andrea Smith, technology expert and journalist.
In an average year, consumers pay more than $17.2 billion in taxes and fees to the wireless carriers. Often they don’t even know what these fees are for! To save on your bills, look for transparent billing practices, like those that include all taxes in fees on statements and don’t charge you a penny more than promised. T-Mobile’s unlimited monthly plan, T-Mobile ONE, now includes all taxes and fees in the pricing. It’s one of the only wireless providers who guarantee that the price you are advertised is the price you pay.
   • Treat your data as a right, not a privilege. It is predicted the majority of TV will be viewed on mobile devices this year, so be prepared to use more data each month than ever before. One key tip: connect your mobile devices to Wi-Fi whenever possible.
If excess data charges constantly turn your family’s wireless bill into a monthly nightmare, find an unlimited plan or a wireless provider that doesn’t charge overages, so your leisure activities aren’t counted against you. Right now, T-Mobile is offering a family of four unlimited data for $40 per line, with taxes and fees included in that price, so there are no bill surprises. The plan also pays $10 back each month to customers who use less than 2GB.
   • Help technology help you. These days, mobile apps can help you track spending and some can even help you save. For example, Mvelopes, a free budgeting app, helps users avoid over spending by offering real-time updates as purchases are made. Other apps such as Mint, give users an opportunity to check credit scores and automate bill payments.
   • Look for rewards, and then take advantage of them. When choosing service providers, seek out reward programs like the ones you find for credit cards. Some tech companies offer customers exclusive deals on entertainment, dining and more when you download an app or sign up for the program. For example, the T-Mobile Tuesdays app features weekly free offers and discounts to customers from partners including Fandango, Lyft, Wendy’s, Shell Gas and more.
   • Evaluate your needs, and slim down accordingly. Do a tech audit. Are you really using that cable or landline service enough to make the expense worthwhile? Could you be a cord cutter and just use streaming video services for TV? Evaluate your consumption for a month and determine if you actually use all the services that you pay for each month.
As we all come to rely more on our technology, it can be easy to pay extra fees blindly. Becoming an informed consumer can help take on any potential challenge or unexpected change.

Safe Winter Driving Tips

Picture
(StatePoint) While winter can be a beautiful time of year, it can also be a treacherous season on the roads. Winter driving conditions require increased attention and an ability to adapt quickly.
In 2015, 8,010 people nationwide were killed in car crashes between December and March, resulting in an average seven percent per month increase from 2014, according to the National Safety Council (NSC). These numbers are a warning to everyone on the roads about how dangerous winter driving can be.
“Winter looks more idyllic outside our house windows than outside our windshield,” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council. “The good news is many cars are equipped with life-saving technologies. It is important that drivers understand how the technologies work in order to drive safely in winter conditions.”
In an effort to prevent crashes on the road this winter, MyCarDoesWhat, an NSC and University of Iowa initiative, is offering some major pieces of advice for driving in winter conditions.
   • Slow down. Drivers frequently underestimate how long it takes to brake and how difficult it can be to steer on slippery roads.
   • Don’t use cruise control on slippery surfaces like ice and snow. It will diminish your control and reduce your reaction time in the event of a skid.
   • Remember, bridges and overpasses freeze before roadways, so be alert in cold weather when approaching one.
   • Many new safety technologies (like back-up cameras) have outside sensors that can freeze or fog up. Always make sure they are clear so they work their best.
MyCarDoesWhat also reminds drivers of the safety technologies that can help vehicles adapt in slippery and changing conditions.
   • Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) help drivers maintain control by preventing wheels from locking up. ABS works differently than traditional brakes, delivering and releasing precise braking pressure to each wheel as needed. So, don’t pump the brakes if you have ABS. Just hold them down firmly and look and steer in the direction you want to go. The brakes may buzz and vibrate when the ABS has activated.
   • Traction control helps you accelerate without spinning out on slippery surfaces like snow and ice.
   • Electronic stability control senses when you may be losing control around a corner or curve, and can stabilize your car if it begins to veer off the road.
   • Adaptive headlights adjust to changing roadway conditions -- such as curves -- to provide optimum illumination along the roadway during long winter nights and periods of low daytime visibility.
   • The temperature warning feature provides updates about upcoming roadway conditions such as black ice.
“When there is snow and ice on the road, antilock brakes can improve the stability of your braking so you can steer better,” said Dan McGehee, director of the University of Iowa National Advanced Driver Simulator. “Remember to hold the brakes down even when they pulse and vibrate.”
For more information, visit MyCarDoesWhat.org and follow MyCarDoesWhat on Twitter and Facebook.
Stay safe this winter. Learn how your car works and drive slowly in dangerous conditions.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to hontzc@bangorsd.org
