Dear Fellow Slate Belt Residents,
Again, we ask our community to pull together.  This time it's not to help build a YMCA but to stop the building of a Sludge Treatment Facility next to the Waste Management landfill in Plainfield Township.  We urge as many citizens as possible to find all the information given to us through sludgefree.umbt on Facebook,  John Reinhart’s January 17th letter in the Express Times, and the facebook Sludge Free Slate Belt flyers.
This information will get you up to speed quickly.  We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at tech@gkedc.com and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us.  Contacting individual board members would be helpful.
Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great.  The future of our families and neighborhoods are at stake.

          Synagro Meeting Tomorrow Night
   Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 709 of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act that the Plainfield Township Planning Commission will hold a rescheduled regular meeting on Monday, June 12, 2017, at 7:00 P.M. prevailing local time until 10:30 P.M. prevailing local time at the Wind Gap Middle School located at 1620 Teels Road, Pen Argyl, PA 18072.
   The meeting will be held in the Russell H. Roper Auditorium. This meeting replaces the previously advertised regular meeting originally scheduled for Monday, June 19, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. The purpose of the meeting is to consider both Old and New Business and any other items that may come before the Planning Commission members for their consideration.
   Old Business and New Business agenda items are expected to include the following matters: Review of Synagro Technologies, Inc. Special Exception Use/Variances Permit application and Site Plan (submitted to the Township on December 5, 2016); Review of Synagro Technologies, Inc. Alternate Site Zoning Permit and Site Plan (submitted to the Township on March 31, 2017).

Breathing Could be Life Changing

   We’ve been breathing since the day we were born. Why the heck would we need more practice at it? But the ancient technique of breathwork is having a moment—celebs like Gisele Bündchen and Christy Turlington swear by it, and it has some serious mood-enhancing and body-boosting benefits. Here’s what you need to know before you try it.
Wait, what exactly is breathwork? 
   
Practitioner Debbie Attias from New York's Maha Rose Center for Healing is breaking it down for us. She describes it as “an active meditation where we alter the breath to reach deeper states of consciousness and awareness.” Ooo, so new-agey. Breathwork can take many forms, but the basic principle is to use breath awareness and exercises to boost your physical, mental and spiritual health. 
Why the sudden interest? The celebrity attention (hey Gisele), definitely doesn’t hurt. But our hunch is it’s because we’re all super stressed right now. New York City breathwork teacher Erin Telford agrees. “People are seeking inner peace,” she says. “And breathwork is one way to do that that's efficient and effective.” 
So how do you do it? You can practice breathwork in a group, one-on-one with a practitioner, or at home by yourself. Sessions often last for hours and usually involve lying down on a yoga mat and breathing in a highly controlled (and not always comfortable) fashion. Experiences vary, but many people say it can get pretty intense—think visions, life-changing revelations and outpourings of emotion. Telford was working as an acupuncturist and Reiki master for years before she tried it and says that it was one of the most powerful healing experiences of her life. “It gave me an outlet for all of the repressed anger, resentment, grief and sadness that was in my body.”
Whoa, sounds cathartic. Any other health benefits?One group of Danish researchers found that breathwork noticeably improved the mood of participants, while another study published in the Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy suggested that it might be helpful in treating anxiety and depression. And according to expert Dan Brulé (who counts Navy SEALS, Olympians and Tony Robbins as clients) mastering your breath might give you a leg-up in your career. “Sometimes all it takes is a slight tweak of the breath to open up all kinds of new levels of abilities, skills and possibilities,” he says.
Sign me up. Where can I try it? Check with your local meditation or yoga center for group sessions, or do a quick Google to find a private practitioner. Looking for a quick fix? Get a taste for breathwork with this simple three-minute anti-stress exercise. Aaaand breathe.

The Three Minute Cure

​    Try the Three Minute Cure, an easy and intuitive meditation developed by John Sahakian, a Los Angeles-based clinical hypnotherapist and yoga instructor.
Breathe Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes. Focus on your breath at your nostrils or in your chest, and count 12 to 15 long breaths.
   See As you count another set of 12 to 15 breaths, visualize yourself somewhere pleasant and safe: the beach, on a hike, perhaps with a loved one.
   Say In another set of breaths, use your inner voice to remind yourself that life is a gift, and that you are thankful to learn new things. In a final set of breaths, tell yourself that a positive mental outlook is the most practical way to overcome obstacles.

Music on Mondays at Dansbury Depot June 12
   Come and enjoy music and art at the depot. Vendors and art begin at 6:00 PM; music at 7:00. A free will offering will be taken on behalf of the musicians. Event is held rain or shine as they move inside the depot if the weather is bad For a relaxing evening, come and enjoy music and art at the depot.  Bring a chair and your family and friends.
   The performers this week are the J.M. Hill Elementary School Chorus. Their director is Cathy Tynemouth.   She states the following about the group:
"This is the fourth and fifth grade chorus from J.M. Hill Elementary School.  This year, this chorus had over 80 members.  Along with their two annual chorus concerts, they performed in the community throughout the year.  They have sung in the past years at East Stroudsburg Borough's Harvest Fest, Big Brother/Big Sister Telethon, Pocono Medical Center's Tree Lighting, Stroud Mall, Lackawanna Train Ride Excursions, PTA events, and Pancake Day.  This year their spring program was "A Musical Road Trip Across the USA".  They stopped in many places on their travels and performed songs like "Fifty Nifty United States", Deep in the Heart of Texas", and "Shenandoah".  Join them on this musical journey where they always end up "Home"! 
    Linda Kolbek is the artist for the evening.    Her art is derivative to the work of Joan Miro and the "cartoon'ish" styles of Sally Cruikshank. It could be described as a "abstract cartoon". Her primary use of media is acrylic on canvas, and the themes range from the whimsical to the strange spiritual world of the unknown. She enjoy play on words, and this is also another reoccurring theme found in the structure of her work. Most of her influence is based on personal experiences that have happened in her life.

 THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 11

Committee to draft the Declaration of Independence - 1776

   On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress selects Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Roger Sherman of Connecticut and Robert R. Livingston of New York to draft a declaration of independence.
Knowing Jefferson’s prowess with a pen, Adams urged him to author the first draft of the document, which was then carefully revised by Adams and Franklin before being given to Congress for review on June 28.
   The revolutionary treatise began with reverberating prose:
  When, in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the Causes which impel them to the Separation.
  We hold these Truths to be self-evident that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
  Congress would not tolerate the Committee of Five’s original language condemning Britain for introducing the slave trade to its American colonies as a cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life & liberty. Those distant people who never offended would have to wait another century and for another war before their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would begin to be recognized.
​Moorestown Drive Bridge Construction
Route 512 Construction – Replacement of the Route 512/Moorestown Drive bridge over Bushkill Creek will begin the week of Monday, June 12. The project is expected to be completed in October. During this time, an alternating traffic pattern will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Woman Rescued With Leg Stuck in Toilet Drain

June 9 (UPI) -- Firefighters in China rescued a woman who was trapped in a bathroom when her leg became stuck in a toilet for six hours.
  Video from the May 31 rescue in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province shows firefighters using various tools in an attempt to free the woman's leg.
  Firefighters said the woman was freed after about six hours of rescue attempts.
​   The woman was injured.

​Tips to Avoid ‘Summer Brain Drain’

(StatePoint) It’s only natural that kids get excited for summer vacation. However, parents may be concerned about “summer brain drain,” which occurs when students lose the knowledge they gained during the school year.
Unfortunately, many children show learning losses when they return to school in the fall, and these summer setbacks are cumulative, resulting in increasing levels of learning loss over time, according to RAND research.
“Parents can keep minds sharp by creating fun summer learning opportunities at home,” says Dr. Clement Chau, director of learning for VTech and LeapFrog, home to a number of educational learning products.
To help families avoid summer setbacks, Chau is offering the following ideas and tips.
• Visit a library. Many libraries offer summer reading challenges which can prove to be great motivation to crack open a book. Enlist the expertise of librarians to help children find titles they’ll enjoy, and use the “five-finger” test to be sure your child has books at the proper reading level: read one page of a book; if there are more than five unknown words, have your child choose another book.
• Learn about a new topic. Has your child been collecting rocks when playing outdoors? Does he or she like to point out different shapes of clouds in the sky? Encourage children to research and learn more about the subjects that fascinate them. If they are passionate about a topic, they’ll be more likely to seek out more information.
• Set aside required reading time. On average, children who read more than 20 minutes a day scored above the 90th percentile on standardized reading tests, and reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing, according to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report. Make reading a daily habit in your home.
• Look for teachable moments. Going to a baseball game? Show your child how to calculate a batting average or a pitcher’s ERA. Making dinner? Let your child measure the ingredients. Clipping coupons? Show your child how much money will be saved in your grocery budget. Going on a road trip? Look up some fun facts about the different states you’ll see on license plates.
• Read together. Forty-eight percent of children ages six to eight report that they want adults to read aloud to them, even though they are able to read on their own, according to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report. Use this time with your child to discuss the topics in the book and ask questions that help build critical thinking skills. Try such prompts as: Tell me about your favorite character. What was your favorite part of the book and why? Would you recommend this book to a friend?
  “With a fun focus on learning, you can help children stay academically active all summer, which will help ease the transition back to the classroom in fall,” says Chau.

 June Is Great Outdoors Month

(StatePoint) Spending time enjoying nature is good for the body and mind, helping to reduce stress, increase focus and provide opportunities for physical activity, say studies. Unfortunately, our busy schedules sometimes don’t allow us to get outside as often as we would like.
  Great Outdoors Month, celebrated in June, is an excellent opportunity to go on an outdoor adventure. As you make your plans and enact them, consider these tips for making the most of your trip.
Get Informed
  Visiting a new place? Learn more about the area, investigating its natural and social histories before you hit the trail, river route or campsite. You’ll be more likely to identify rock types and plant and animal species with a bit of knowledge. This can also help you understand and appreciate what you are experiencing with greater depth.
Use Tech Tools
  New tech gear is augmenting the outdoor experience for both casual adventurers and hardcore enthusiasts. For example, the Smart Outdoor Watch WSD-F20 from Casio has a rugged build, low power consumption GPS, is water resistant and features dedicated apps for outdoor activities. If downloaded prior to your journey, full color maps can be used offline. And because it offers a range of tools that can be used independent of your smartphone, including an altimeter, barometer, thermometer and compass, it frees up users to fully enjoy their adventures. Other features include a Location Memory app, which enables you to customize maps with markers and text so you can revisit otherwise unmarked spots, such as a great viewpoint or fishing spot.
Be Prepared
  It’s hard to be at one with nature when nature itself is making you miserable. So be prepared for all kinds of weather and climate conditions. If you are camping, patch or replace tents that are worn or torn and bring a tarp for extra protection. Check the weather report for temperature, precipitation and other factors and pack the proper clothing and sleeping bag accordingly. Make sure socks and shoes or hiking boots are in good shape so that long hikes don’t cause you any undue pain. And of course, don’t leave civilization without a first aid kit, water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
  With a bit of extra preparation, you can take your outdoor adventures higher and farther than ever before

1885 Club Accepting Nominations 

   The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
   Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
​  Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive

    The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Music on Mondays at Dansbury Depot June 12
   Come and enjoy music and art at the depot. Vendors and art begin at 6:00 PM; music at 7:00. A free will offering will be taken on behalf of the musicians. Event is held rain or shine as they move inside the depot if the weather is bad For a relaxing evening, come and enjoy music and art at the depot.  Bring a chair and your family and friends.
   The performers this week are the J.M. Hill Elementary School Chorus. Their director is Cathy Tynemouth.   She states the following about the group:
"This is the fourth and fifth grade chorus from J.M. Hill Elementary School.  This year, this chorus had over 80 members.  Along with their two annual chorus concerts, they performed in the community throughout the year.  They have sung in the past years at East Stroudsburg Borough's Harvest Fest, Big Brother/Big Sister Telethon, Pocono Medical Center's Tree Lighting, Stroud Mall, Lackawanna Train Ride Excursions, PTA events, and Pancake Day.  This year their spring program was "A Musical Road Trip Across the USA".  They stopped in many places on their travels and performed songs like "Fifty Nifty United States", Deep in the Heart of Texas", and "Shenandoah".  Join them on this musical journey where they always end up "Home"! 
    Linda Kolbek is the artist for the evening.    Her art is derivative to the work of Joan Miro and the "cartoon'ish" styles of Sally Cruikshank. It could be described as a "abstract cartoon". Her primary use of media is acrylic on canvas, and the themes range from the whimsical to the strange spiritual world of the unknown. She enjoy play on words, and this is also another reoccurring theme found in the structure of her work. Most of her influence is based on personal experiences that have happened in her life.

Moorestown Drive Bridge Construction
Route 512 Construction – Replacement of the Route 512/Moorestown Drive bridge over Bushkill Creek will begin the week of Monday, June 12. The project is expected to be completed in October. During this time, an alternating traffic pattern will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Free Workshop on Locating Grant Sources
   Librarians at Northampton Community College’s (NCC) Mack Library will be offering a free workshop for representatives of nonprofit organizations who want to learn more about locating grant sources on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Rd., Bethlehem Township.  The workshop will provide an overview and demonstration of grant resources included in the Foundation Directory Online database, as well as an opportunity to use the database.   Seating is limited so please make your reservation by calling 610-861-5358 no later than Thursday, June 8, 2017.

Tasty Tuesdays Returns to Trinity Lutheran Church
Trinity Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Slatebelt Community this summer.  Tasty Tuesdays will begin on June 13 and will run until August 8th.  Every Tuesday the bag lunch will be available between 11am- 1pm and will contain a sandwich, fresh fruit/vegetable, chips, healthy snack bar, and a drink.  Please call the church office to register- 610-588-2023,  or come to the church on June 13 between 11am- 1pm.

PUBLIC NOTICE
    The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit.
   As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife.
   Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants.


BMCL Nature Adventure
   The Blue Mt. Community Library will offer a new program this summer for children.  The library will partner with Waste Management for NATURE ADVENTURE!  Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are encouraged to attend this program for Storytime and outdoor activities and should dress to explore!  The 3 programs will be held at 10:00 am at the WM Environmental Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl:  June 14 (Pollinators), July 12 (Landfill Trucks and More!) and August 9 (Bluebirds and Tree Swallows).
  The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE!  The program runs June 12 through August 12.  Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook.  The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk.  Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.  The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. Membership is free to all residents in the Pen Argyl Area School District.  The library is located at 216 S.    One of the oldest continuous running Strawberry Festival's is celebrating 23 years. Faith church’s Strawberry Festival has been kicking-off Summer for 23 years now.  Everyone in the Slate Belt knows that the summer weather won't arrival until Faith Church’s Annual Strawberry Festival.  Now in its 23th year the Annual Strawberry Festival will finally arrive on Saturday, June 17, 2017 from 4pm to 7pm, rain or shine. Since Faith church has been making the traditional Strawberry pie for 23 years now, you might say, we know a thing or two about strawberry desserts. So to celebrate this year’s Festival the menu will also include those old time favorites like Hot Dogs, Turkey and Beef barbecue, along with a popular selection of salads, and cold drinks.

​  ​Quiet Valley’s Garden Party & Tour Opening
   On Saturday June 17, 2017 Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will open for their 54th Summer Tour Season starting with their tenth annual Summer Garden Party. Visitors coming to the farm for the historic tour will experience guides portraying family members going about a typical day on a homestead in the 1800s. In addition to the tour, folks will have a chance to involve themselves in a variety of garden-related activities. Tour a typical Pennsylvania German kitchen garden, get help with garden basics, sample yummy things made with fresh herbs and vegetables and take home some recipes. At the outdoor brick oven herb breads will be baked and samples shared. 
   This year’s feature area, Outdoor Living Space will have an example of a comfortable gathering place for families looking for some fresh air and relaxation at home, complete with a Zen gravel bed. 
   There will be new adventures at the party including two Food Demonstrations, Dutch Oven Cooking with Fresh Herbs and Easy Herb Cheese Making. Older youth and adults will enjoy making birds using wire and paper as well as quilled flower mobiles. The Children’s Area will have lots of summer craft fun with insect creatures, 3D flower cards and bubble pictures. Visitors are welcome to hang some artwork from the tree featured in the theme area.
   This is a day full of gardening inspiration, artistic expression and fun in the outdoors.
   This event is sponsored in part by a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Project Stream grant.
All activities on June 17 are rain or shine and are subject to change. Resorts Casino Trip   
   St. Elizabeth's of Hungary Parish in Pen Argyl is sponsoring a trip to the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City on Thursday,

July 16-23
 
This week-long camp for students ages 14 to 17 is sponsored by the Northampton County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and DCNR/Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center. The school includes a two-day canoe trip on the Delaware River as well as field trips to beautiful natural areas in the county. Slate Belt Heritage Center Golf Tournament
   The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their Annual Golf Tournament on Friday, August 11, 2017 at the Shawnee Golf Resort. “Shotgun Start” is at 7:30 AM with registration, coffee & Danish from 6:30 – 7:30 AM. Format is a 4-Man Scramble and the cost is $75.00 per golfer which includes, Golf, Cart, Food and Cookout after the event. Prizes include, “Longest Drive” and “Closest to Pin”. Cars, trucks, low riders, high rollers, helicopters, power wheels, golf carts, big rigs, firetrucks/rescue vehicles, ATVs, boats, Snowmobiles, new, OLD, street rods, race cars, R/c cars trucks, tow trucks, wresckers etc.  You know what we do and how we do it! We are going to be bigger, better, faster, stronger! A day of speed, horsepower and motor mayhem at the Plainfield Farmers grove, route 191 and Kesslersville road, Nazareth pa.
