 Slaters Win Eastern Conference Gold
Beat Northwestern 22-20

Slater Come-Backs Turn Season Around

by Larry Cory
The Bangor High School football team edged Northwestern 22-20 Friday night to win the Eastern Conference Division 4A championship for a happy ending to a season that could have ended on a dismal note if it weren't for a series of three consecutive come-from-behind wins.
After four games this fall,  the Slaters had won two straight games for a 2-2 record and optimistically looked forward to the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, as in real life, football games don't always turn out the way one would hope.
Bangor lost its next four games , dropping to a 2-6 record with only two games to play.  Wilson was next,  with a 4-4 record and having already clinched a berth in the District XI tourney, this looked like a possible fifth straight setback. The Slaters could have easily thrown in the proverbial towel and coasted through this game awaiting the season's finale with arch-rival Pen Argyl.
To the Slaters' credit, however, they rallied from an 18-14 deficit to the Warriors to win 28-24. Next was Pen Argyl. Again the Slaters rallied. This time from a 21-12 third quarter hole to win 27-21.
Next up was Northwestern which had shut Bangor 14-0 just a few weeks ago. Friday night's Eastern Conference playoff win over the Tigers, however, continued the come-from-behind trend as the Slaters fell behind 14-6 in the second quarter. Bangor tied the game at 14-14 near the end of the half on a two-yard run by Garrett DeBoer and a two-point conversion on a jump pass with 2:05 left in the half.
Another one-yard run by DeBoer and a two-point conversion with 37 seconds left in the third period put Bangor up 22-14. Northwestern, however, scored with 2:28 left in the fourth quarter, but the Slater defense stuffed a two-point conversion attempt and Bangor hung on to win their first post-season championship since 1997 when Bangor defeated Pittston 33-8 on an icy field at Bangor Park.
DeBoer finished the game with 165 yards rushing on 35 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also finished the season with an unofficial total of 1293 yards rushing. Eddie Hay scored the Slaters' first touchdown in the first quarter on a 43-yard run. Hay also caught two passes for 53 yards. Joey Shrader gained 45 yards rushing on five carries. Quarterback Bo Meyers passed for 66 yards.

  Remember - Fall Back

Picture
To be on time for your Sunday activities, remember to turn your clocks back one hour tonight. The return to Standard Time is a great reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detectors, too.
Most of the United States will gain an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday by turning back clocks to Standard Time.
Why do we observe Daylight Saving Time? The simple answer is to save on energy costs.
One of the biggest reasons we change our clocks to Daylight Saving Time (DST) is that it reportedly saves electricity. Newer studies, however, are challenging long-held reason.
In general, energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting our homes is directly connected to when we go to bed and when we get up. Bedtime for most of us is late evening through the year. When we go to bed, we turn off the lights and TV.
In the average home, 25% of all the electricity we use is for lighting and small appliances, such as TVs, VCRs and stereos. A good percentage of energy consumed by lighting and appliances occurs in the evening when families are home. By moving the clock ahead one hour, we can cut the amount of electricity we consume each day.
Studies done in the 1970s by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that we trim the entire country’s electricity usage by about 1% EACH DAY with Daylight Saving Time.
Benjamin Franklin proposed Daylight Saving Time as an American delegate in Paris in 1784. The idea didn’t really catch on in the United States until World War I, in an effort to save on artificial lighting costs. The same thing happened during World War II.
After the war, states individually chose whether to observe daylight saving time and when they wanted to begin it during the year. As you can imagine, this just caused a lot of confusion, especially for travelers and those of us in the news business.
The Uniform Time Act of 1966 provided the basic framework for alternating between Daylight Saving Time and standard time, which we now observe in the United States. But Congress can’t seem to resist tinkering with it.
For example, in 1973 Daylight Saving Time was observed all year, instead of just the spring and summer. Again in 1986, Congress declared that DST would begin at 2 AM on the first Sunday in April and end at 2 AM on the last Sunday in October.
In 2007, Congress voted to switch the end of daylight saving time to the first Sunday in November to offer trick-or-treaters more daylight time to venture into the streets, even though most children wait until after dark to go out anyway.
While most states observe the spring forward / fall back switch in time, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands and Arizona do not change the clock.
However, the Navajo Nation in Arizona does participate in daylight saving time and will roll the clock back Sunday. The Hopi Reservation, entirely surrounded by the Navajo Nation, does not observe daylight saving time, creating a “doughnut hole” in time in the middle of Arizona.
Oh, and remember: it is Daylight Saving (with no S) time, because we are ‘saving daylight.’ Get it?

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - November 4

Soviets End Hungarian revolution  1956

A spontaneous national uprising that began 12 days before in Hungary is viciously crushed by Soviet tanks and troops on this day in 1956. Thousands were killed and wounded and nearly a quarter-million Hungarians fled the country.
The problems in Hungary began in October 1956, when thousands of protesters took to the streets demanding a more democratic political system and freedom from Soviet oppression. In response, Communist Party officials appointed Imre Nagy, a former premier who had been dismissed from the party for his criticisms of Stalinist policies, as the new premier. Nagy tried to restore peace and asked the Soviets to withdraw their troops. The Soviets did so, but Nagy then tried to push the Hungarian revolt forward by abolishing one-party rule. He also announced that Hungary was withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact (the Soviet bloc’s equivalent of NATO).
On November 4, 1956, Soviet tanks rolled into Budapest to crush, once and for all, the national uprising. Vicious street fighting broke out, but the Soviets’ great power ensured victory. At 5:20 a.m., Hungarian Prime Minister Imre Nagy announced the invasion to the nation in a grim, 35-second broadcast, declaring: “Our troops are fighting. The Government is in place.” Within hours, though, Nagy sought asylum at the Yugoslav Embassy in Budapest. He was captured shortly thereafter and executed two years later. Nagy’s former colleague and imminent replacement, János Kádár, who had been flown secretly from Moscow to the city of Szolnok, 60 miles southeast of the capital, prepared to take power with Moscow’s backing.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey.  He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard).  In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes.  Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem.  The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.
