1885 Club Hall of Fame
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2015 “1885 Club Hall of Fame.”
In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work. Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of “The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 125 years. Purpose To recognize exceptional alumni, who have brought honor to the Bangor Area School District. Guidelines Must have demonstrated: 1. Outstanding accomplishments in his or her chosen field 2. Dedicated commitment to his or her community 3. Acts of service 4. All years of graduation from 1885 to 10 years before the present year. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown: Bangor Area High School Alumni Association Attention: 1885 Club Chairperson PO Box 673 Bangor, PA 18013 For questions or additional information, email Carole Hontz at [email protected]. . HOME IMPROVEMENT.....Upgrade Your Fireplace to Improve Energy Efficiency
(StatePoint) Heating and cooling your home typically comprises nearly half of the average American’s utility bill, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Unfortunately, a portion of that expenditure is lost. While most homeowners know that insulating, patching and weatherizing can reduce heat loss, there is one major energy eater in your home that you may not have considered -- that charming staple of dens, family rooms and anywhere people gather: the fireplace. Traditional masonry style wood-burning fireplaces are a leading source of indoor air loss and draft, even more so than windows and doors. “Traditional wood fireplaces have a lot of charm, but unfortunately, they can be inefficient even when they aren’t in use,” says Becky Scribner, brand director at Heat & Glo, a leading manufacturer of gas and wood fireplaces, stoves and inserts. However, you don’t need to sacrifice your fire this winter to lower your bill -- in fact, it’s possible to convert your fireplace into an energy efficient heat source with the following tips: • Don’t send your hard earned money up and out the chimney. When your fireplace is not in use, make sure your chimney damper is closed. You may also install a flue sealer, which is an affordable, inflatable stopper that fits below the damper to further seal off the chimney. • Ensure your chimney and fireplace is inspected, maintained and cleaned annually. A contractor can ensure the job is done safely and thoroughly. • Add doors or a cover to the front of your fireplace to help reduce the draft and add a nice aesthetic. • Consider a gas fireplace insert. In addition to lowering your energy bills and generating more radiant heat, they’re cleaner to maintain -- no ash, soot, or smoke -- and are low maintenance, turning on and off with the flip of a switch. Plus, a new insert like the Escape from Heat & Glo looks great and uses energy-saving firebox technology to increase efficiency. Learn more about the benefits of a gas fireplace insert at www.heatnglo.com/Rekindle. • For those who love the smell, crackle and process of building a real fire, don’t despair. Pellet and EPA-certified wood inserts can be an easy, clean and efficient alternative as well. In the pursuit of energy-efficiency, don’t say goodbye to tradition. Instead, give your fireplace a much needed upgrade.
A teenager from China reportedly cut off his own hand because he was addicted to the internet.
The 19-year-old, known only as 'Little Wang', chopped off his left hand at the wrist with a kitchen knife after leaving a message for his mother and sneaking out of his family home. The 'web junkie', from Nantong in the Jiangsu province, left his severed hand on the ground and called a taxi to take him to hospital, according to Jiangsu TV. "We cannot accept what has happened. It was completely out of the blue. He was a smart boy," his mother told reporters. The unidentified woman had gone to her son's bedroom at around 11pm and found a handwritten note on the bed. "Mum, I have gone to hospital for a while," it read. "Don't worry. I will definitely come back this evening." Surgeons managed to reattach the hand after it was recovered by police but said they could not guarantee full mobility would return, reports The Telegraph. There are an estimated 24 million young 'web junkies' in China and a growing number of clinics and military-style 'boot camps' designed to rehabilitate them. |
Pen Argyl Academic Wall of Fame Nominations
It is time for the Pen Argyl High School Alumni Association to select the 2015 Inductees to the Academic Wall of Fame.
